5 trains to bring workers from J&K
NOIDA: Migrant workers and students staying in different districts of Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh are likely to be ferried back home in the two states in five trains from Sunday.
Officials said the same set of trains that will leave Lucknow for J&K will bring back workers and students from the Valley. UP has about 18,000 migrants from J&K, mostly working in parts of Agra, Aligarh and Hathras.
Around 2,000 of them are students. J&K has about 16,000 migrants from UP, though the administration was yet to come with final numbers till late on Saturday evening.
“Most migrants from Jammu and Kashmir stay in parts of Agra, Aligarh and Hathras. We have requested for trains and are awaiting confirmation from the divisional railway manager. Those who have registered on the government portal will be informed about their travel details through text messages. They will also be screened before boarding the trains,” said Narendra Bhooshan, nodal officer for evacuations from Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Starting from Lucknow, the trains are expected to halt at Agra and Aligarh to pick up passengers. In J&K, all trains will halt at Udhampur.
“Udhampur is the only station where trains will stop. The migrants from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir have to gather at Udhampur, while those coming from UP will deboard there. There are workers from almost all districts of UP here, but most of them are in Kashmir,” said Md Rashid Kohli, coordinating officer for UP from Jammu and Kashmir.
So far, UP has brought back 1.2 lakh migrant workers from different states in 117 trains. Additional chief secretary Awanish Awasthi said 98 other trains had been permitted to ferry back migrant workers over the next two days. “That makes an average of over 40 trains a day. A record 11 trains each have come to Lucknow and Gorakhpur already. So far, we have received lakhs of migrants and students at 36 stations of UP. They have come in 114 trains,” said Awasthi.
