BHOPAL/BAREILLY: Two days after 16 migrant workers from Madhya Pradesh were run over by a goods train while sleeping on the tracks in Maharashtra, six labourers died and 40 others were injured in two separate road accidents in MP and UP in the last 24 hours.
A group of 18 labourers, who were working in Hyderabad, were hitching a ride home on a truck carrying mangoes. The truck overturned in Narsinghpur district of MP late on Saturday night, injuring all the 18, seven of them seriously.
Five of the seriously wounded died within a few hours during treatment at Narsinghpur district hospital. The two other critically wounded workers were being shifted to Jabalpur when one of them succumbed to his injuries. The other one escaped from a Jabalpur hospital shortly after admission.
‘All labourers were hidden in the mangoes’
When TOI contacted Narsinghpur SP Gurukaran Singh, he said, “We have not been informed about anyone going missing. Jabalpur police have said that one of the two shifted there died.”
The accident took place near Patha village, about 250km from Bhopal. Rescue was carried out under torchlight and the headlights of police vehicles.
“All the labourers were hidden among the mangoes, which were being transported to UP from Hyderabad. The truck overturned around 11pm. The other injured are out of danger at Narsinghpur district hospital. One of them is suffering from cough and cold, so they have all been tested for Covid-19,” the SP said.
Those killed were identified as Nihal Singh, Indresh Pandey, Ranveer Prasad, Sandeep Dixit, Chhotu Tiwari and Nem Singh.
