Guest workers from Kerala walk to Mangaluru, sent back by cops

Karnataka police on Tuesday sent back nearly 100 guest workers from Uppala in Kasaragod after they tried to cross the border to Karnataka by walking along the railway track to Mangaluru. Natives of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh, they tried to reach Mangaluru with the hope that they would get train to their native place.

Police said the workers, who have registered their names to catch the next special train to UP, vacated their rooms in Uppala and started walking towards Mangaluru.
KANNUR: Karnataka police on Tuesday sent back nearly 100 guest workers from Uppala in Kasaragod after they tried to cross the border to Karnataka by walking along the railway track to Mangaluru. Natives of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh, they tried to reach Mangaluru with the hope that they would get train to their native place.
Police said the workers, who have registered their names to catch the next special train to UP, vacated their rooms in Uppala and started walking towards Mangaluru.
The workers said that they were finding it difficult to survive here without job or proper food and hence they made such a move. Moreover, they were having problem with their landlords.
“Though we have promised to take care of their food requirement and their stay they were adamant and wanted to go to Mangaluru. But once they reached the border, Karnataka police sent them back,” said Kasaragod district police chief P S Sabu.
