Doctor dies of Covid-19 in Amt, 21 new cases in Akola
Nagpur: A 44-year-old general physician from Amravati, who was undergoing treatment at Covid ward since April 30, died on Thursday. This was the 13th Covid-19 death in Amravati and 35th in Vidarbha, including one suicide.
Apart from the death, Amravati recorded one new case on Thursday. Akola, which is the worst-hit so far, surpassed 200 mark of Covid-19 cases with 21 people from different localities in the town testing positive.
Nagpur recorded three new cases, two of them Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome cases from non-containment zones. In this way, total 25 new cases were reported in Vidarbha on Thursday.
In some good news, 40 patients were discharged from Covid hospitals on Thursday. These include 28 from Nagpur and 12 from Akola. Covid hospitals in Nagpur have started following the revised discharge policy, so some 40 patients are set to be discharged on Friday.
The case of the 44-yr-old doctor who died in Amravati is the first case of a health worker’s death due to Covid-19 in Vidarbha. The deceased’s family has also tested Covid-19 positive, and all are admitted in the same hospital. They include his 36-year-old brother, 30-year-old wife, 4-year-old son and two daughters aged 10 and 13. The 89-year-old father of the deceased doctor had died on May 1 with Covid symptoms, but had not been tested for it.
Meanwhile, Dhamangaon Railway administration has home quarantined 16 porters and others who came in contact with a Yavatmal truck driver, who is now in institutional quarantine at Yavatmal after a woman in his close contact from Chandrapur tested positive yesterday.
“On May 12, the truck driver drove a fertilizer truck to Dhamangaon, unloaded it there and returned to Yavatmal. Meanwhile, his Chandrapur female relative tested positive. She had come to meet him some days ago. So, Yavatmal administration put him in institutional quarantine. Swabs of all suspects have been taken and reports are awaited,” said an official.

Yavatmal was lucky to have no new positive patients on the fourth day too. On Thursday, there were 59 persons in GMC isolation wards of whom 14 are presumptive cases. The civil surgeon has taken 62 swab samples from the containment area of village Dhanora of Umarkhed tehsil, of which 44 tested negative. On Thursday, GMC has sent 18 swab samples to Nagpur and a total of 66 reports are awaited.
Collector MD Singh and SP M Rajkumar held a meeting in the containment areas of Indira Nagar and Patipura, and urged residents to remain at home and assured supply of essentials, including water. Singh later visited the containment areas of Walisaheb Nagar in Ner, and Dhanora village in Umarkhed tehsil.
There was no positive coronavirus case in Chandrapur on Thursday. The five samples of family members of the second positive girl patient of Binba Gate locality were negative. Health officer Dr Rajkumar Gahlot said reports of five other contacts are awaited. The Binba Gate locality has been sealed. Health department has carried out health survey of 278 people in 190 houses in the vicinity of positive girl patient.
Meanwhile, the first positive patient, a security guard, is being treated at Nagpur GMCH and his condition is stable. A total of 53 close contacts of the security guard were found negative, while two reports are awaited. So far none of his contact have been found positive. All other districts in Vidarbha continued to remain corona-free on Thursday.
