NASHIK: The MIDC police on Thursday night managed to disperse a mob which was assaulting two men and a woman at Vilad village in Ahmednagar district, 150km from here. The woman had a two-year-old child with her.
The woman and her paramour, from Wagholi in Pune district, had come to Vilad with the other man five days ago in search of employment. They had rented a house in a farm a little away from the village and had dug a pit nearby to construct a toilet.
The villagers, seeing the child with the woman, suspected that she and her paramour had dug the pit for a human sacrifice.
Around 8pm, a mob of 50 villagers marched to the house and confronted the trio. PSI Pawar Supnar of the MIDC police said the mob, mainly comprising youths carrying lathis, were questioning the trio. They were also abusing, slapping and heckling them, he said.

PSI Pawar Supnar of the MIDC police said, “We got a call around 8.30pm that the mob had reached the house. I along with a constable rushed there. The mob was abusing, slapping and heckling the trio. We asked them to calm down and said we would conduct an inquiry. Village sarpanch Sanjay Bachkar and gram sevak Sagar Khalekar also helped pacify the mob.”
The woman told the police that she had separated from her husband as he used to harass her. She and her paramour had come to Vilad and both had even got employment in a factory. The other man had come with them to the village to help the woman’s paramour sell off his motorcycle. The police called the woman’s parents in Wagholi and confirmed her statements, after which the mob dispersed.
The trio has been quarantined at a facility under the jurisdiction of the MIDC police station. Supnar said they, along with the farmer who gave them the house on rent, have been booked under section 188 of the IPC.
