25 migrants killed, 33 injured in road accident in UP's Auraiya; PM Modi condoles deaths

At least 25 migrant labourers were killed and 20 others injured when a truck carrying them collided with a DCM in Auraiya. Most of the migrants were coming from Rajasthan and were natives of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of migrant workers and said the government is carrying out relief work in full swing.

KANPUR: At least 25 migrant labourers were killed and 33 others injured when a truck carrying them collided with a DCM in Auraiya. Most of the migrants were coming from Rajasthan and were natives of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Of the 33 injured, 17 of them were being shifted to PGI at Saifai in Etawah as their condition was described as critical. Six were given primary treatment and then let off.
Ten others are recuperating in the district hospital.
Reports said the incident took place near Mihauli village under Kotwali police circle around 3.30am. Auraiya district magistrate Abhishek Singh said investigations were under way to establish the cause of the mishap. He said the priority was to provide best possible medical help to the injured. An FIR has been registered and begun in the incident.

The injured passengers have been admitted to a nearby hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of migrant workers and said the government is carrying out relief work in full swing.
"The accident in Auraiya of Uttar Pradesh is very tragic. The government is carrying out relief work in full swing," the prime minister tweeted.

Taking a serious note of the incident, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed senior officials to visit the site and ensure proper medical help to the injured. “Chief minister has also directed that all the injured be provided medical care immediately and the commissioner and IG Kanpur to visit the site and immediately file a report on the cause of the accident,” said UP Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav slammed the ruling BJP for turning a blind eye to the problems faced by migrants. Describing the incident as 'heart wrenching', the former UP CM said the government must now start focusing on the woes of the migrants.

The Samajwadi Party chief demanded that the state government must release an ex-gratia relief of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.

Recently at least 15 migrant workers were killed in three separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The Uttar Pradesh government had on Friday announced that district authorities must ensure that migrant workers do not walk or cycle home and all such persons must be provide transport.
IG Kanpur inspects Auraiya accident site, to submit report to CM
On the orders of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, inspector general (IG), Kanpur Mohit Agarwal on Saturday inspected the accident site and will submit a detailed report.
Yogi Adityanath has directed IG Kanpur to submit a report on the cause of the accident immediately.
Superintendent of police, Auraiya, Suniti told TOI that some migrant workers from Sagar in MP had hired a DCM from Delhi to head home. They had stopped at a tea stall and were having tea.
In the meantime, another truck bearing registration number of Rajasthan and hired from Jaipur that was laden with calcium hydrate and was also carrying migrant workers from West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand hit the stationary DCM.
“The impact of the crash was such that both the vehicles overturned and careened off the highway,” said the SP. She also said that tea stall operators informed the UP 112 and then a police force was rushed to the spot. Most of the migrants were stuck in the mangled pieces of the truck and sacks of calcium hydrate.
Additional director general of police, Kanpur Zone, JN Singh told TOI that due to the increased influx of migrants from Jhansi the government has decided to operate at least two trains and also 450 buses. "Jhansi alone is witnessing movement of around 15,000 working migrants from borders, while 7,000 workers cross from Mahoba district into UP," he said.
