Lockdown: 2,824 guest workers leave Tirunelveli, Tuticorin in Shramik special trains
Prior to boarding the trains, passengers were screened and were told to maintain social distance during the journey
MADURAI: As many as 2,824 guest workers, families and students from various parts of north India, who were stranded in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts of Tamil Nadu, left for their hometowns in two Shramik special trains on Saturday.
The Tirunelveli – Basti (Uttar Pradesh) Shramik special departed from Tirunelveli at 7pm. The train with 1,435 passengers is expected to reach Basti at 4.35pm on Monday.
The distance covered by rail between both the places is over 2,500km.
As many as 1,389 people left for their native places in Tuticorin –Muzaffarpur Shramik special train at 2.45pm. Railway officials said that the train is scheduled to reach Muzaffarpur in Bihar at 3.30pm on Monday.
Prior to boarding the train, the passengers were screened and were told to maintain social distance during the 2,700 km journey. Passengers were also provided with food packets and water bottles.
Officials from the Tirunelveli and Tuticorin district administrations, health, police and railway officials were present when the trains left.
