JALANDHAR: The first free bus to facilitate migrants stranded during lockdown in Jalandhar on Monday plied from the local bus stand to Saharanpur with 30 migrants. Punjab government would bear the entire expenses of the bus.
The scheme has been initiated by the state government after successfully plying around 55 trains from Jalandhar for free travel to the migrants stranded in the city.

As soon as the migrants reached the city bus stand they were screened by the special teams of Health department for medical check-up. Only 30 passengers were allowed in one bus for a destination and the officers ensured that physical distance between them was maintained.
Before boarding of buses by the migrant workers were provided free food, water and other essentials by the administration. They further said that elaborate arrangements had already been put in place by the district administration and more such buses would run in the coming days too.
These buses would be run free of cost by the state government to send migrants to Gautam Budh Nagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Bulandshehar, Muzzafarnagar, Baghpat, Saharanpur, Mathura and Hapur.
Meanwhile three more ‘Shramik Express’ trains with 3,600 migrants left from Jalandhar for Purnia, Araria in Bihar and Jaunpur in UP. Punjab government has already spent Rs 3.93 Crore for the free travel of migrants to their native states from Jalandhar alone.
