1,273 personnel from state police test positive for COVID-19; Mumbai police figures cross 600 mark

Mumbai: Personnel from the Maharashtra Police, who are creating a buffer between the coronavirus and citizens in the state by enforcing the lockdown and availing help during the time of crisis by fighting the pandemic on the frontline, are paying a heavy price for their relentless work.

By Monday, the number of personnel in the state police who tested positive for COVID-19 crossed the 1,200 mark with 1,273 personnel having been infected with the virus. The figure includes 131 officers, including a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) rank officer from Mumbai and an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) from neighbouring Thane, the two areas worst hit by the pandemic in the state.

Of the 1,273 positive cases, 602 are from Mumbai alone where 8 of the personnel have succumbed to the infection so far, while the death toll in the rest of the state stands at 3, including an officer.



The spread of the virus in the force has become a cause of worry for the police administration as in just about three days (from Friday), around 263 personnel had been added to the list of positive cases. On Friday, the number of positive cases stood at 1,008.

A top state police official told Mirror Online that the maximum number of positive cases have been received from Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Solapur and Pune rural districts.

The good news is that out of the total cases, 291 personnel, including 34 officers have recovered so far. This includes a large number of personnel from the SRPF camp at Hingoli where 60 of them (out of 69 positive cases) have recovered.

At present, there are 971 active cases in the 2.01 lakh strong force, which includes 96 officers.

On Monday, the first batch of 5 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) arrived in Mumbai. The 5 companies would translate into 600 personnel. Following their arrival, a decision has been taken to relieve three companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel from duty so as to allow them take rest in the barracks.

The first batch of 5 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) has arrived in Mumbai to assist the Mumbai police in the on-going battle against coronavirus, even as over 600 of the city police personnel tested positive for COVID-19 by Monday.


The state had made a request for 20 companies of CAPF from the Centre so as to ease the burden on the reserve forces which have been pulled out in full strength on the lockdown duty.

The state government has already announced Rs 50 lakh compensation to the next of kin of policemen who fall prey to the virus infection in the line of duty. Moreover, employment to one of their family members has also been promised.


Meanwhile, the state police have registered a total of 1,10,140 cases under Section 188 of IPC for lockdown violations across the state, resulting in the arrest of over 20,000 people. Apart from that, in 240 instances of attacks on policemen, 819 people have been arrested so far.
