    The Shramik Special trains are being operated primarily on the requests of the states which want to send the migrant workers to their home states. The Railways is bearing 85 per cent of the total cost of running each of the trains while the rest is being borne by the states. Out of the 2,570 trains, 505 are yet to reach their destination, while 2,065 trains have completed their journey.

    • Amid the nationwide lockdown, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday held a meeting with the officers of the 'COVID-19 management Team-11' here.
    • With 232 new COVID-19 cases reported on Friday in Uttar Pradesh, the state tally has reached 5,735 on Friday.
    • In another meeting on Friday, the Chief Minister had issued directives to implement the lockdown rules strictly. He asked for maintaining of social distancing and ensuring that no crowding takes place.
    • While reviewing the lockdown measures, he asked for effective police patrolling which according to him would help in preventing the accidents in the border areas as well as on highways and expressways. He also underlined the utility of foot-patrolling in the markets

    The doctor at Tanda Medical College in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh who was earlier tested COVID-19 positive, was reported negative on Saturday, said CMO Kangra Dr Gurdarshan Gupta. "One more COVID patient, a doctor at Tanda medical college reports negative, will be kept in home isolation for the next 7 days," said the Kangra CMO.

    ID cards of MLAs to act as e-passes for travel in MP: Govt

    • Identity cards of legislators in Madhya Pradesh will now be recognised as the valid e-pass for travelling amidst the coronavirus lockdown, a state government official said on Saturday.
    • The ID card will also be considered as an e-pass in a red zone, he said.
    • Even if legislators wish to visit their home districts or want to attend meetings be travelling away from their residences, identity cards issued by the state Legislative Assembly would be recognised as an e-pass, he said.
    • Following the instructions of the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Additional Chief Secretary and State Control Room in-charge ICP Keshari has issued a circular in this regard.

    Remdesivir drug effective against coronavirus: Study

    • Anti-viral drug remdesivir cuts recovery times in coronavirus patients, according to the full results of a trial published Friday night, three weeks after America's top infectious diseases expert said the study showed the medication has "clear-cut" benefits.
    • Complete results from the research, which was carried out by US government agency the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), were published by leading medical periodical the New England Journal of Medicine.
    • The United States authorized the emergency use of remdesivir in hospitals on May 1, followed by Japan, while Europe is considering following suit.

    India will try to restart a good percentage of international passenger flights before August, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday, three days after announcing resumption of domestic flights from May 25. All scheduled commercial passenger flights have been suspended in India since March 25 when the Modi government imposed a lockdown to contain the novel cornavirus pandemic.

    In Tamil Nadu, beauty parlours, salons to open from tomorrow, except in Chennai

    • Tamil Nadu government on Saturday allowed beauty parlours and salons across the state, except those in Greater Chennai police limits, to reopen from Sunday with certain riders.
    • The government had earlier allowed salons in rural areas to resume business from May 19.
    • On Saturday, Chief Minister K Palaniswami, while announcing that salons and beauty parlours can reopen from tomorrow, said the businesses should ensure both workers and customers wear masks and strictly enforce social distancing in the work place.
    • The shops should be disinfected at least five times a day and frequent hand washing should be practised, he said in a statement.
    • The shops can function from 7 am to 7 pm, but without using air-conditioners.

    Passengers arriving to Karnataka from 6 states to undergo institutional quarantine, says DGP

    • Two days before the resumption of domestic air travel, Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) on Saturday said that the passengers arriving from six states with the highest COVID-19 tally would be required to undergo a seven-day "institutional quarantine" which will be followed by home quarantine.
    • Maharashtra has the highest number of confirmed cases at 44,582, followed by Tamil Nadu (14,753), Gujarat (13,268), Delhi (12,319) and Rajasthan (6,494), as per the Union Health Ministry.
    • Although for passengers entering Karnataka from the neighbouring states to travel internationally would not be quarantined, DGP said.
