Amid India-China tension, Pakistan says New Delhi threatening regional peace
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan voiced support on Wednesday for Beijing amid the India-China standoff on the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, with foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi claiming New Delhi was triggering a crisis and putting at stake regional peace and security through aggressive policies against its neighbours.
Qureshi, in a conversation with state broadcaster Pakistan Television (PTV), blamed New Delhi for ratcheting up tension with Beijing over its construction of airstrips and other infrastructure in Ladakh.
"China has always shown tolerance and talked about peace. China is still saying that the issue can be resolved with dialogue, but India continues with its construction plan in the disputed region, causing a serious threat to regional peace," the minister said.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan targeted India again, using his favourite "Nazi" comparison in a series of tweets. "The Hindutva Supremacist Modi Govt with its arrogant expansionist policies, akin to Nazi’s lebensraum (living space), is becoming a threat to India’s neighbours. Bangladesh through its Citizenship Act, border disputes with Nepal & China, & Pak threatened with false flag operation (sic)," PM Khan claimed on Twitter. "…I have always maintained the fascist Modi Govt is not only a threat to India’s minorities by relegating them to 2nd class citizens’ status, but also threat to regional peace (sic)," he added.
Qureshi urged the Indian government to make use of the "mechanisms of dialogue and consultations to solve disputes". "A war was fought between India and China in 1962, and again India is resorting to aggressive posturing in the same territory," he claimed.
Accusing the Narendra Modi-led government of changing the demographic composition of the territory, Qureshi said India had stripped Jammu & Kashmir of its special status last year.
He also accused New Delhi of using Afghanistan against Pakistan. "Sometimes India has problems with Nepal, at other times it (New Delhi) tries to disrupt the Afghan peace process. It (India) tries to promote unrest in Balochistan, and now it has done the same in Ladakh and is trying to blame China for it," the minister claimed, while urging the world to take notice of India’s "hostile polices".
