India should forget catching up with China in growth. Agree?

The GDP numbers for both Q4 and full-year FY20 are out. Although Q4 saved India the blushes by beating most forecasts, it could not save FY20 from becoming the worst year in eight. Considering the fact that the lockdown affected only seven days of Q4, the omens appear even more awful for Q1 of FY21, the better part of which has already gone to waste. So, bye bye, double-digit growth dream?

It takes time to catch up with China in growths.

    Prajesh Rawat (Calcutta, India)

Democracy, judiciary and human rights are great but, when it comes to economic growth Numbers and prospects these are serious hurdles.

    Shyamadas Banerji (USA)

If India improved governance, it could exceed Chinese growth rates. A lot of steps will to be taken which requires focused attention and strong political will.

India has so many freebies to 10 crore families. Workless money is dangerous for economy. And corruption is major Hurdles. India can’t beat China. China controlled covid-19, India struggling.

    Ajit Grewal (Chandigarh)

This is a proper statement as long as shag bhai modi bhai remain India’s fastest growing and foremost economists .

The above premise is intermingled with several unforeseeable factors Yes in short term India can forget double digit growth or getting ahead of China but in long term several factors will impact economic growth not only of India and China but entire economic spectrum which will materially impact global economic syndrome. Certainly technology with intellectual community will help India to surge it's economic growth.

China has gone far ahead of us using US investors and and US technology procured through fair or foul means with totalitarian regime in place while our left still debated and kept our a our Govt busy scaring with American imperialism and giving doles as a mode of development without any work. Now they are competing with US to become number one crippling the economy of democratic countries through corona war or left insurgency by using Hindu-Muslim binary or white-black conflict or through sheer military aggression at multiple places. This is the price that democracies have to pay when faced with both external and internal enemies.

    Sudhir Jatar (Pune)

    Should not forget, certainly NOT.

    Haridas Bhimrao Patt (Nashik)

Nothing is impossible for India, we can do it together!!! With unity

No we can do achieve the double digit growth

Indians are examples of children who prove the adage -spare the rod and spoiled the child. Most of government employees don't bother about punctuality even in healthcare offices like C G H S. Chinese feel proud of their country in spite of lacking freedom Indians enjoy in offices because they know they will be on the top of the world with their talent and their fear or respect as you take it acts as a catalyst.the lack of unions acting against government don't exist in China and none can argue against law of the government which is the final say in matters of work and production. One incident is enough to prove lack of government's weakness and impotency in controlling people to make them follow rules. Religious congregations of Muslims which was mainly responsible for spread of many corona infections would have been shot dead if happened in China.India is vey resourceful in natural commodities and much better in capabilities in technology and produce equipment much superior to those of china. Present infection has further destroyed the hope of India's idea of reaching the top place in the world which it has planned with good progress appeared in the front of the nation. China is planning well to raise against UD supremacy and surely will emerge victorious and there is absolutely no chance of India's defeating china. But only hope for India to plan to go ahead of China is privatisation of all production activities and giving importance and first place to merit.

Why have these useless debates when we should be giving thought to government hospitals and their pitiable condition.

With absolute majority, Govt could have and should have done a lot good. It simply did not. Electronics industry went down when tax was increased from 5% to 18% and 28%. Antone can check this.

India GDP will always grow even if there's a complete lockdown. Because we only know groth rate can only be positive.

yes, their work culture ad commitment to job is simply awesome. One has to spend time in that country to believe that. We are more happy to get salary sitting at home. Those who have assured salary do not want that relaxations are announced from lock down

Do we want to stay competitive with even Bangladesh or Vietnam, then for God's sake start embracing Change, even some pain, change our mindset from Talker to Dooer, work hard, very hard to realise the dream, don't buy any foreign products for 2 years and then let's see the result, don't fall for the Trap this govt is only for Industrialists, try to totally Shun Free this or that, please rememberall the countries that are prosperous today didn't become so over night most have put in hard Labour for 2 or three decades, please remember Prosperity doesn't come by grumbling or aggressive argumentative behaviour, it comes from hard sweat & work , Let's put in 10 to 12 hours work daily like the Chinese if we want any Shanghai's here, I pray we start Doing not just grumbling in this comment section.

Imbesat (Mumbai) replies to Dilip Sinroja

No matter how much hard you work the biggest chump of the profit will be taken by the government that is 18% gst and you'll be left with only 5% and after all that what you get is zero from the government in sich a pandamic.if the government doesn't support what ever you do isn't gonna help you nor the country.the intention of the government should be good and pure and shouldn't be biased towards big players who take care of the government.like we saw in airline sector where the government was concerned for airlines profit and didn't want an empty middle seat and didn't care what it might result later on giving virus to innumerable people.

    A.K.AGARWAL (DELHI)

China govt. and people are focused towards growth of manufacturing, Technology, Research and ultimately business. Their all round emphasis is on development of these areas. For being competitive they use best technology and their labor cost ( when measured on the basis of productivity per labor ) is very low. On the other hand Govt. of India is totally confused. They give only lip service to industrial growth that too in fits and starts. One day every one emphasizes on industrialization and next moment all forget it and it goes to cold storage.India to have consistent policy, only then we can catch China.

    Ksv krishnan (Chennai)

    Yes concentrate on own strengths

Always remember that India reforms in crisis only. In the time of the pandemic, we realise the need for independent and self-reliant.some of our policies like GST and foreign trade is long term benefit generating. So, not to bye the double-digit growth.

What we lacked since Independence till Modi Era,was poor people suffering with poverty of thoughts, premium cost of higher education,an inferiority complex and led by corrupt politicians having no National Agenda on the ground level. Now is the time of India- it shall lead all the economies of the world.

Govt. never motivated manufacturing. Just went on announcing heavy tax collection with indecently high GST, Purchased Made in China Statue boosting China economy by paying 3000 Crores as I remember, something that will promote Corona is at all tourists come to see. Roads in Delhi as bad as it was, safety as bad as it was. Life has been coming down in last 5 years.

    replies to dipi ti

Absolutely Nonsense, this status was entirely built in India by an Indian company. Only a small portico of the statue was cast in China. To hint that entire status was built in China is deliberate and malicious intent at disinformation.

Dipi Ti (New Delhi) replies to

All info on on net. Most know.

It is now done and official !! We somehow seem get caught in the habit of pipe-dreaming! . A reality check pre-covid itself would reveal we are far from able to compete with china or go to that level in terms of growth. However the good news part i expect is that china too will struggle to grow, so the gap will be there but not increasing. China will possibly attain a plateau in growth by 2035 or so.How we kickstart out economy out with our radical thoughts and our three strong legs will determine the same - judiciary, executive , parliament - however business does not recognise these much !! you have to first respect business , before it starts respecting you !! we need more think tanks who can support the govt and avoid once sided decisions from the political brass like in the case of recent lockdown . This is my humble statement .Hopefully in 6months time some parts of economy should kickstart . all we have to do is to grind our teeth and grit for a long haul.

India needs to begin working on building up its own manufacturing & services sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic has crippled India's economy. But, I am sure it will pick up & get better than China as long as the industries take the appropriate safety & secure measures.

India can do better than China in growth rate , because of disenchantment with China of many US companies and they may relocate to India. High hopes??

    Akash (Haryana)

Big question is, whether economy brought the corona or corona brought the problem of Economy🤔🤔🤔

    Pravin modi (Mumbai)

WTO virtually gave the world a kind of a licence to loot from wherever a country can. The dragon won the race. When challenged by Trump they played the dirtiest possible game against the entire humanity of the planet. This is just a beginning. The world knows little what the dragon further holds in it’s arsenal. It is much more than the total of all the villains of WW one and WW two. If not contained now the world will regret. It’s cunning can cost the world dearly not only in terms of human lives but the sovereignties as well both socially and economically. It’s lethality is becoming more and more dangerous with each passing day. No country can weave its economy with a cobra waiting to bite. For Bharatvarsh it is time to get prepared for the kaliyadaman. Otherwise it’s bite can be fatal.

Let India be India, neither China nor America.......Our focus should be on reduction of poverty, self dependence.... It's extremely difficult to be humanitarian and be materially wealthy also. Wealth has been looted/earned by rich nations by attracting experts from other countries, manufacturing/exporting arms, exporting drugs and by illegal occupation of land.... WE SHOULD CHOOSE instead of imitating.

Pravin replies to R D Vohra

RD sir the nation is quarantined and the enemy is knocking our main gate. Economy is a major issue no doubt. Right now we are faced with much bigger issues of saving our social and economic independence. GDP will take care of itself. Bharatvarsh has an inbuilt Shakti to survive a thousand dragons and trillions of corona forona. The nation has the most enviable potential to survive gracefully against any and all odds.

You are saying same what I said but in different way.

every nation is molded in the culture of its people and the particular style of its governance. catching up economically need not be overemphasized. India has the resilience to survive the worst crises yet survive and come out successfully throughout history. It has seen prosperity and adversity on an unprecedented scale, shown its unity and tenacity to fight and win. I strongly believe that India will usher in a bright future in its own way without copying any model or competing with China on purely economic scale.

    Sahil (Delhi)

I don’t think we should compare. We need to be self reliant is the only thing objective. Make in India is one the most powerful campaigns started but unfortunately with no real conversion. If that happens, everything falls into place. Jobs, Income, GDP growth and the likes. This should not be treated as a race to the finish line cause there isn’t one.

We have a good possiblity to recover 1. if Mumbai n Delhi opens up.2. Finance support n action in right direction.3. Agriculture policy Harvest in time, sowing in time, distribution with planning, returns to farmer.

Impossible to predict any thing because of Govt decisions are changing over night.

India should and will surpass China in due course.

Do you really believe the figures given out by the crooked Chinese Government. Kya ham sab Bewakoof hai??? They have doctered all their statistics. A couple of quarters ago they were boasting a growth rate of 6% yet the electricity consumption in that country actually fell compared to the year before. Chori pakar liya. So when you compare the make believe Chinese growth rate and the accurate statistics from India you, my dear reader be the judge.

    Ray (BK)

For India to catch up with China, we should do the following:1. Ban the sale of all tobacco products and alcohol products in India (both Indian made and Foreign made)2. Freeze the sale and registration of all new homes and automobiles in cities and towns where the population density exceeds 10000 per sq.km.3. Levy a population cess of 10% on Gross taxable income or profits on each earning member of such families who have more than 2 children per couple, exclude them from eligibility for government jobs and disenfranchise them from the right to vote in elections. 4. Ensure that every government Utility service is corporatized and introduce private Indian companies to compete in that space (ex. Electricity transmission and distribution, Water supply and sanitation, Waste collection & management, telecom services, roads and civic amenities, railways, food corp. of India and APMCs) etc.5. Exit out of all international Free trade agreements, promote FPI investments to invest and nurture ecosystems in all such sectors where India is heavily dependent on foreign products. 6. Reform the judiciary, law enforcement, cybersecurity and intelligence services by suitably investing in technology and processes such that the operating efficiency and productivity of these institutions can double every 18 months, benchmarked on par with metrics and measurements used in USA/EU. 7. Mechanizing farming, fishing, providing grants for MSMEs offering socially beneficial goods and services

    (Delhi)

Not only catching up but surpassing should be the aim, backed with intelligent market analysis, required marketing skills, continuously reviewing and in a sustainable way. At some level international trade and cooperation need respecting.

I never thought India could ever catch up with China - we are a tortoise held back by tied legs. The nineties or late eighties were the years when we should have woken up to the economic realities and ushered in reforms and invited capital across sectors especially Mining, Metal, and Manufacturing. Defense was a taboo where private investment and expertise were unwelcome totally. Then there are the many shades of opinion among the main political parties who call the shots - tweedle dee, tweedle dum, one view while in power, the opposite while in the opposition. Even now we can grow to great heights and use the current impasse - the pandemic, the US - China brouhaha, etc. - to open up the economy and have good growth rates. We need to raise our standards and quality of life and not play catch up. While doing this --- opening up in real terms --- if we come near, that would be great.

China has been successful in catching the pulse of the western world by focussing on the skill of its workforce by training, upgrading, efficiency, and management of resources to achieve a phenomenal increase in economies of scale. this was possible only because of their system of governance unlike predominantly democratic/capitalist systems in the west. the west was trapped into shifting their manufacturing units including the high-tech ones to China for making handsome profits in the process and become increasingly dependent on China. China exploited the opportunity to acquire modern technology and know-how, in engineering, medicine, chemicals, phamaceuticals, and defense production. as a result it built a huge surplus in trade over the years. the surplus was used to create world-class infrastructure, research, and higher educational institutions. they also focussed on sending hoards of their students to foreign universities for education, training, research, and internships and return to China withjob prospects for a better future with a well-designed plan to slowly but surely become a super-power comparable to America. having achieved that they are now showing their clout by raising border disputes with neighbors, Claiming sea-routes, projects like BRI to promote their own interests and generally grabbing businesses and territories via indebtedness among other nations in Asia, Africa, and middle-east.

why forget it just should not think and waste time and energy of such lofty aims

India should have it's own aims and objectives and need not be in race with China, India's aim should be to reduce poverty, inequality, bring justice and inclusive and sustainable development. For this we should have our growth model.

There is no comparison, logic or reason to compare India with China on any economic or financial parameter. Undoubtedly, Indain economy has gone through a debacle because of the "lockdown " on account of the COVID 19 episode. There is no second opinion on the fact that it takes a lot of time for the Indian economy to bounce back. We can see some hope in the figures by second quarter of 2021 and probably some positive growth figures by 4th quarter of 2021.

CORONA POSITIVE IS NO DEATH SENTENCE. WE HAD SOLID TEN WORKS INHOUSE TRAINING. BE RUTHLESS ON SOCIAL DISTANCING. IGNORE CHAINA, LETS DO 12 HOURS FOR FOUR DAYS A WEEK.

Everyone should have a high and constructive goal. If India dream of catching up China then we should respect this thought. Every time we will see the economic figure and it will motivate ourselves to work to reduce the gap. Yes, we are way behind China. We dont have democracy and not dictatorship like them. We have to follow labour law, land law and many law made to protect weaker section. People sometimes forget these things. Someday we will achieve our goal.

No, we will overcome this very soon and beat china in this year only but we should all stand together for this

Absolutely. At least for the next 2-3 years.

China does not have toll tax. Road construction is planned for couple of decades ahead. On the hand in India, every 5 years, with change in government, mega-infrastructure projects are at stake. China has almost ended COVID 19 epidemic and preparing for the second wave during Oct'20/ Dec'20. In India, we still don't know what stage of epidemic we are? Feelling like economy is going backward with high rate of unemployment. It is diffcult to say if we can pick up during next decade

Kumar (China) replies to RAMESH MURLIDHAR Bhatawdekar

Your all statements are correct except no TOLL TAX. Please check carefully before any statement you make. Thanks

For 3 years there are no possible.

Attitude to effective progress, single minded focus to get results, concept of self-sufficiency for each and every commune and, most importantly-a Single Party plus Person diktat to be the foremost in the World;are the attributes completely missing from the Indian psyche!China is already nearly 30 years ahead in overall progress - something that we can never catch up with.India requires a reset of the Mind Vision and Good Governance, to achieve in a very small measure what China is today. So,let’s forget about ever catching up with China!

It is difficult to predict in present scenario.it all depends upon how china make brain it's relationships with other nations.
