NEW DELHI: An event manager and a finance executive were arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting, blackmailing and extorting almost a dozen women from all over the country using fake profiles on online dating sites. Police said that the two were friends and one of them would pose as an orthopaedic surgeon to approach women on the sites.
Police said that Anand Kumar (31) and Priyam Yadav (26) were tracked down from south Delhi after one of their victims approached the cyber cell with a complaint.
"When we scanned through their phones, we found a few other contact numbers of women they had duped. We got in touch with them, and the women forwarded us their complaints," said Anyesh Roy, DCP, cyber cell.
Kumar told police they had been duping women for the past year. He would call himself Dr Rohit Gujral, connect with women from well-off backgrounds and then convince them to marry him. Police said that one of their victims had even taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh after Kumar had asked her to arrange for some money for the marriage ceremony.
Police said that Kumar and Yadav would also ask women to share their private pictures and later blackmailed them using those pictures. Both men are residents of Ghaziabad and allegedly targeted women in other cities to avoid suspicion.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
