    20 more Delhi Police personnel test positive

    • Twenty police personnel posted at Moti Nagar police station in West Delhi tested positive for COVID-19, officials said on Monday.
    • The first case at the police station was reported around 10 days ago, following which other staff were advised to remain in home quarantine, they said.
    • The SHO of the police station, his reader, an inspector and head constables who work with him and personnel from the picket team are among those who have tested positive for the deadly virus, a senior police officer said.

    As virus surges, Pakistan's Khan says country to reopen

    • Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan announced Monday his government would end several months of coronavirus restrictions, even as it emerged cases of the disease are likely many times higher than previously thought.
    • In a televised address, Khan said impoverished Pakistan cannot afford to keep businesses closed and said almost all sectors -- including domestic tourism -- would re-open.
    • His announcement came shortly after an alarming government report was leaked to the media that showed cases of novel coronavirus in the eastern city of Lahore are estimated to be at about 670,800.

    Nashik reports 30 new cases

    • The number of coronavirus positive cases in Maharashtra's Nashik district rose by 30 to 1,254 on Monday and that of the deceased to 73 with one more person succumbing to the viral infection, an official said.
    • The swab report of the deceased, who hailed from the city, came positive earlier in the day.

    • The legislator had a fever since the last few days and he eventually tested positive for COVID-19, said a release by his office.

    Liquor shops in Delhi can now open daily, no odd-even rule

    • The Delhi excise department Monday lifted the odd-even restriction on opening of liquor shops, allowing them to operate daily, after the city government announced more relaxations in the coronavirus lockdown.
    • The government also extended timing for the opening of liquor shops by one-and-a-half hours.
    • "Liquor shops will now remain open from 9 am to 8 pm in Delhi," a government official said. Until now, they would be allowed to open till 6.30 pm.

    COVID-19 awareness campaign launched in Punjab

    • Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday launched a month-long drive to spread mass awareness about the coronavirus pandemic.
    • The campaign, which is part of the 'Mission Fateh', will bring the people of Punjab into its fold to make the fight against COVID-19 a battle of the people, by the people and for the people, said the chief minister in a statement here.
    • Describing 'Mission Fateh' as a symbol of the resolve of people of Punjab to check the spread of coronavirus through discipline, cooperation and compassion, the Singh stressed the need for adherence to all safety protocols, cooperation with the state government through compliance with the lockdown restrictions, and compassion towards the poor.

    • The World Health Organization said Monday it wanted to keep working with the United States despite President Donald Trump's decision to cut ties with the UN health agency.
    • WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said US involvement with the organisation had made a "great difference" over the decades and "it is WHO's wish for this collaboration to continue".
    • Trump said Friday he was severing US ties with the WHO, which he says failed to do enough to combat the initial spread of the novel coronavirus.

    Spain reports no virus deaths for first time since March

    • Spain on Monday reported no official deaths from the new coronavirus in a 24-hour period for the first time since March.
    • The development is ``very, very encouraging,'' emergency health response chief Fernando Simon said.
    • Also, Spain recorded only 71 new COVID-19 infections over the past 24 hours, he told a news conference.
    • ``We are in a very good place in the evolution of the pandemic,'' Simon said. ``The statistics are following a trend. They are going in the right direction.''

    55-year-old virus patient passes away, says Kerala CM

    • A 55-year-old woman from Kozhikode who had tested positive for coronavirus passed away on Sunday, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday.
    • "Yesterday, a 55-year-old woman, resident of Kozhikode, who had tested COVID-19 positive passed away. She had a heart-related ailment. She had returned from Gulf and were undergoing treatment from Kozhikode Medical College," the Chief Minister said during a press conference here.
    • A few days ago, a 53-year-old woman from Kalpetta in Wayanad, who had tested positive for COVID-19, had passed away. She was suffering from cancer and had returned from abroad on May 20.

    Bus services resume in Tamil Nadu's Madurai

    • Bus services in Tamil Nadu's Madurai resumed on Monday as "Unlock 1" came into effect with certain relaxations.
    • Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses ran from Madurai to Dindigul, Theni, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts.

    • "In reality, the virus clinically no longer exists in Italy," said Alberto Zangrillo, head of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, the capital of the northern Lombardy region, which has been the worst-hit by the pandemic.
    • "Someone has to take responsibility for terrorising the country".
    • That prompted cries of disbelief from other experts, who said Zangrillo may have mistaken a higher detection rate of asymptomatic cases for diminished potency of the virus.

    Gautam Buddh Nagar reports 17 new cases

    • Seventeen people, including four children from a village, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar on Monday, taking the number of cases in the district to 470, officials said.
    • Also, five patients were discharged after treatment for coronavirus even as the number of active cases rose to 164, the officials said.
    • Gautam Buddh Nagar, adjoining Delhi, has so far recorded seven deaths due to the novel virus. All the deceased are men aged 58, 60, 62, 62, 65, 71 and 90, according to district officials.

    Authorities in Kashmir planning to reopen schools from mid-June

    • Authorities in Kashmir are planning to reopen schools, which have been closed due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, in the valley from the middle of June this year.
    • The government schools have been asked to provide two reusable masks and a pair of hand gloves to each student while installing hand sanitisers and liquid soap dispensers at the entry point of each school, according to a letter written by the director finance in the school education department.
    • The expenditure on this account shall be booked under the Samagra grants released to schools for day to day expenses, it added.

    Chennai returnee becomes Arunachal Pradesh's fifth virus patient

    • Arunachal Pradesh reported its fifth COVID-19 case on Monday after a 26-year-old student who had returned to the state from Chennai tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a senior official said.
    • With the fresh case, a total of four persons are now afflicted with the disease in Arunachal Pradesh while the state's first patient has recovered and was discharged from a hospital on April 16.
    • The new patient had returned to the state in a Shramik Special train on May 23 and was housed in a quarantine centre in Namsai district. His swab samples have tested positive for COVID-19, state Health Secretary P Parthiban said.
