Coronation Street star Andy Whyment has shared his reaction to the news the ITV soap will recommence filming next week, on Tuesday June 9.

The soap, like others, was forced to halt filming in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

To help stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep cast and crew safe, shows like Corrie made the decision to abandon filming - leaving many worried the show would go off air.

It was recently confirmed that Corrie had enough filmed episodes to last them until June.

Now, ITV have announced filming will restart this month, and that the show will not be going off air at all.

After fellow ITV soap Emmerdale were the first UK soap to make it back to the studio, they adopted some strict social distancing and filming rules.

Corrie bosses have done the same as they attempt to begin filming again, while actor Andy doesn't know what to expect.

Confessing it feels "strange" and may take time to get used to, Kirk actor Andy detailed some of the rules he and his co-stars will have to meet.

He told Lorraine Kelly on her show on Monday: "We're going back on the 9th - fantastic news.

"We've had about 10 weeks off...we're going back in a week's time.

"We were a bit worried we would go off air but it's going to be okay now as we're going back to filming."

On the rules, he went on: "No kissing scenes, but it's going to be interesting if Kirk walked down the street with Beth, they might have held hands but none of that now.

"We're going to have to have an induction before we go back. There'll be things like a one way system and a director will stay in one studio. It's gonna take some time getting used to but we just want to be back."

He described it as a "strange time for everyone" but said he was thankful to return to work after so long.

Corrie confirmed the news on Twitter, before detailing full rules and how it would work.

They tweeted: "BREAKING NEWS: Coronation Street is to recommence filming from Tuesday 9th June."

The show will stick with the current three episodes per week pattern, and will remain on air in July.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm on ITV.
