UFC On ESPN 9 Medical Suspensions: Two Fighters Out Up To 6 Months

This article is more than 3 years old.

The UFC was in Las Vegas on Saturday for UFC on ESPN 9. The fight card was the UFC’s first event in its home state of Nevada since UFC 248 in early March. In the main event, Gilbert Burns defeated former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley via unanimous decision. Woodley was the No. 1 ranked fighter in the official welterweight rankings heading into the contest, whole Burns checked in at No. 6.

Burns opened a nasty cut over Woodley’s left eyebrow in the first round. The cutman was not able to close the gaping wound, but he did do a good job in keeping the wound from bleeding and that allowed Woodley to make it through the five-round contest.

The opening fight of the night saw Chris Gutierrez score the 10th stoppage via leg kicks in UFC history. His opponent in that bout, Vince Morales, could be out up to six months, but not due to the damage his legs took. Morales needs to be checked for a broken orbital bone.

The other potential 180-day medical suspension belongs to Spike Carlyle, who lost a decision to Billy Quarantillo.

UFC on ESPN 9 took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
