Since resuming a pickup service at the main branch downtown on June 1, there has been a large demand for books focusing on home DIY projects.

This is possibly because people plan to spend more time at home the next few months, with time to spend on projects they have always wanted to try.

The great thing about DIY is that it can mean so many things to different people. Typing “DIY” into the library’s online catalogue turns up a wide range of topics.

The first three book results that come up are: Projects and Tips for Every Room, DIY Autoflowering Cannabis: An Easy Way to Grow Your Own and DIY for Dog Lovers.

Many people would associate the term DIY with home improvements. There are several books on the subject, including 2015’s Master Basic DIY, which offers many handy tips. The library also has a number of the tried-and-tested Black and Decker how-to series, which includes books on building your own shed and greenhouse, doing your own electrical work, completing masonry projects and more.

The library also has many digital resources for DIYers, including a digital version of the magazine. The Simple Things, available through the PressReader app. This magazine will appeal to people of all ages because it has a number of projects and recipes that can be done in a few minutes or a few hours. For example, the latest issue has a recipe for honeysuckle iced tea, along with a feature on how to use food scraps to eliminate waste.

For more advanced DIY plans, PressReader also has current and back issues of Family Handyman and Popular Woodworking. These magazines have features on creating advanced pergolas and concrete patios, floating plywood desks and beautiful jewelry boxes.

If you don’t have a library card, you can apply for one online and begin using all of the library’s digital services today.

At Your Library is a weekly column provided by the staff of the Brantford Public Library. Readers requiring more information can visit www.brantford.library.on.ca.
