Kerala: 40% of active cases in Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Malappuram, Palakkad and Thrissur have become the three Covid-19 hotbeds in the state, with these districts together accounting for 526 (40.3%) of the total 1,303 active cases. On Friday also, Thrissur and Malappuram recorded the highest number of cases at 14 each.
The state reported 78 cases on the day, of which 10 got infected through contact.
Infection among health workers, a worrying factor, is also increasing by the day, with six more from Thrissur testing positive on the day.
As many as 40 health workers have been infected in the third phase of the pandemic in the state.
Usman Kutty (71), who died in Kannur on Thursday night, has also been tested positive. He had come to the state by train from Mumbai on June 9.
With this, the total Covid deaths in the state have become 20, including the Mahe native who died at Pariyaram medical college on April 11.
67 of 78 new cases are returnees
Of those infected through contact, seven are from Thrissur and three from Malappuram. Among the new cases, 36 people had come from abroad and 31from other states. Besides Thrissur and Malappuram, Alappuzha reported 13 cases on Friday; Pathanamthitta seven; Ernakulam and Palakkad five each; Kollam, Kozhikode and Kasaragod four each; Kannur and Kottayam three each and Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki one each.

Malappuram (199) has the highest number of active cases, followed by Palakkad (177), Thrissur (150), Kannur (128), Kasaragod (98), Kollam (91), Alappuzha (89) and Pathanamthitta (85). A total of 2,27,402 people are under surveillance in the state, of whom 2,25,417 are either under home or institutional quarantine and 1,985 admitted to various hospitals with suspected symptoms. The total number of cases reported in the state so far is 2,322. As many as 32 patients recovered from the infection on Friday, taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 999.
In the last 24 hours, 5,001 samples were tested in the state. Till date, 1,06,850 samples have been collected for tests, of which results of 3,392 samples are pending. Besides, 26,143 of the total 28,356 samples collected from high-risk groups as part of sentinel surveillance have also tested negative. So far, 2,24,779 people have reached the state from outside after May 5, of whom 8,573 are pregnant women, 5,965 senior citizens and 5,824 children aged below 10.
