Karnataka: Education minister calls first exam after lockdown a success
Karnataka education minister S Suresh Kumar said more students appeared for II PU English paper this time than last year
Bengaluru: The state education department described Thursday’s exam as a success, saying safety measures were followed at all centres and there were no complaints of paper leak or copying.
The results of the II PU exams are likely to be announced by the first week of July. “Last year, 6.7 lakh students had enrolled to appear for the II PU English paper. Of these, 6.3 lakh appeared, an attendance of 94.5 per cent.
This year, the attendance is over 96 per cent,” said minister for primary and secondary education S Suresh Kumar.
On the absentees, he said: “We will check why 23,635 students did not attend the exam today (Thursday). If there are genuine cases, we will give them a chance to write the supplementary exam as freshers.”
Thursday’s exam was the first after the lockdown was eased. “This was a test for us, and it has boosted our confidence to conduct SSLC exams. We now know which areas need improvement and what additional measures we must take,” he said. “There were reports of social-distancing lapses. There were three problem areas: the gates, barricades and doors. There was also a rush near notice boards that displayed registration and room numbers. For SSLC exams, we will send these details to students.”
On Thursday, problems were reported at 24-26 centres out of the total 1,016 in the state. “We will issue a notice to chief examiners of these centres and conduct an inquiry into what went wrong here. We had asked parents not to come inside the premises, but groups of parents did not adhere to it,” Kumar said.
Over 220 students from containment zones appeared for the exam; 162 in Dharwad, 13 in Davanagere, 15 in Shivamogga and nine in Udupi. Separately, 20 students were unwell, including 12 in Mysuru. Students in these two categories were seated in separate rooms.
The evaluation for 26 subjects has been completed, while the process is underway for another 12. “The results can be expected by July first week,” said the minister.
