14,516 Coronavirus Cases In India In 24 hours In Steepest One-Day Jump: 10 Points

New Delhi: India registered the biggest single-day jump in its coronavirus tally with 14,516 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 3.95 lakh cases, the Union Health Ministry said this morning. A total of 12,948 patients have died in India since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 375 patients died in the last 24 hours. The country's recovery rate stood at 54.12 per cent this morning. This is the first time that more that coronavirus cases in India - fourth worst-hit country by the pandemic - crossed the 14,000-mark in a single day. Only the United States, Brazil and Russia have more cases than India.

  1. This is the third consecutive day that India registered a record jump in the number of coronavirus cases. On Friday, India recorded the single-day biggest jump of 13,586 cases. On Thursday, 12,881 new infections were recorded in 24 hours, according to the government data.

  2. India tested the highest number of samples in the last 24 hours (1,89,869), the government said this morning. A total of 66,16,496 samples have been tested so far. India's average positivity rate - ratio of positive cases to the number of tests conducted - stood at 7.64 per cent this morning.

  3. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat have recorded the highest number of cases in India. Maharashtra has logged 1.24 lakh cases so far, 5,893 patients have died.

No COVID-19 patient must be allowed to undergo home isolation before mandatory five-day institutional quarantine, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal said in an order on Friday, prompting a sharp response from the Delhi government, which has been grappling with an acute shortage of hospital beds.

A 12-day complete lockdown started on Friday in Chennai - Tamil Nadu's coronavirus hotspot - and parts of three adjoining districts of Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu, with the police using drones for surveillance and intensifying patrols to check violations. Health authority officials said it's a "make-or-break" situation in Chennai.

  7. The centre on Friday asked states to ensure strict implementation of the Union Home Ministry's guidelines on home isolation at the field level to effectively curb the spread of coronavirus, after taking note of instances of laxity in some cases, news agency PTI reported.

  10. The World Health Organization warned on Friday of a "new and dangerous phase" of the coronavirus pandemic with people tiring of lockdowns despite the disease's accelerating spread. "The world is in a new and dangerous phase. Many people are understandably fed up with being at home... but the virus is still spreading fast," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference.
