AHMEDABAD: In a special case, Ahmedabad's civic body has agreed to admit any Covid-19 positive patients or suspected cases from IIT-Gandhinagar in Palej on municipal quota across three designated private Covid care hospitals in the city.
The hospitals are SGVP hospital on SG Highway, Sterling Cancer Hospital on Sindhu Bhavan Road and CIMS Hospital on Science City Road.
This small exception was made in the light of the IIT-Gn being an institute of national importance.
The campus has not reported a single Covid-19 case till date.
For now, 30 beds have been allocated to the institute and the numbers may be increased in future, after consultation with the AMC. It will be for the first time that the AMC has agreed on such an arrangement. "Under the arrangement IIT-Gn will pay towards all charges of the patient but the rates applied will be that of the AMC quota. AMC will not be spending any money," says a senior AMC official. The order was passed on June 22, according to the civic health officials.
There are 500 students on the IIT-Gn campus and some 300 staff and faculty members and their families. When asked whether there were any suspected Covid cases reported from within the campus, the senior AMC official confirmed that there were no cases till now.
IIT-Gandhinagar has designated three nodal officers at the institutes on whose recommendation patients or suspects from the institute will be admitted at the designated private hospitals.
Sources in IIT-Gn confirmed the development. "A lot of our staff, faculty and students stay within the campus. We had requested the AMC if such an arrangement was possible and the civic body has been kind enough to agree," said the IIT-Gn senior official.
