AIZAWL: With more reports coming in from the
remote villages in
Champhai district, state disaster management and rehabilitation department officials said that at least 30 houses and 6 churches were damaged after an
earthquake of a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter Scale rocked Mizoram on early Monday morning.
Champhai district deputy commissioner Maria CT Zuali said that no human casualty was reported from the east and north eastern parts of the state adjoining Myanmar due to the earthquake having an epicentre near Khawbung village.
The tremor was felt all over the state while damages were only reported from Champhai district, especially from within the East Tuipui assembly constituency.
Six churches belonging to different denominations including the Presbyterian Church, the United Pentecostal Church and the Isua Krista Kohhran (IKK) or the Church of Jesus Christ were damaged in the quake in 5 villages.
Over 30 houses and buildings belonging to the government and individuals were damaged in Khawbung, Vaphai, Leithum, Vanzau, Chawngtlai and Zokhawthar villages.
State disaster management and rehabilitation minister Lalchamliana said that relief and compensation would be given to those affected by the quake through the District Disaster Management Authority of the concerned district.
