The city of Mumbai witnesses rain as monsoon knocks once again on the doors of Maharashtra. The Meteorological Department has predicted that in the next 48 hours there will be intermittent rainfall in Mumbai. Rainfall is said to occur at irregular intervals.

There have been warnings of rain earlier in Mumbai and in the surrounding areas, however, the rainfall was expected to be normal. Although it is being predicted that the downpour is going to increase in Mumbai from Monday, June 22.

Mahesh Palat, the VP of Skymet, had earlier informed that rain and thunder clouds are still hovering over the south of Mumbai. He further predicted it to move north and the downpour to gradually increase over the southern suburbs than over the city.

Palawat had also predicted that moderate to heavy shower can be witnessed between June 16 to June 22. The southwest monsoon had earlier continued its advance and covered the whole of Maharashtra and parts of Chhattisgarh and Gujarat while many parts of northern India experienced hot and humid weather. Meanwhile, as incessant rains have lashed Nashik in north Maharashtra, the IMD had earlier predicted that parts of North Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Mumbai will witness heavy downpour.

In the past, rainfall was reported in Harnai (in Ratnagiri) in Konkan, Ahmednagar in central Maharashtra, Aurangabad in Marathwada and Gondia in Vidarbha. The city of Mumbai usually receives an average 2,354 mm of rain from the months of June to September.

With the surge in the number of coronavirus cases this year, rainfall proves to be worrisome for the residents of Mumbai. Rainfall leads to waterlogging which further makes it difficult to maintain social distancing which is crucial during this pandemic. Furthermore, incessant rains impact the low lying areas of the city which are also worst hit as a consequence of the novel coronavirus.
