    Pak courts acquits former PM Raja Pervez Ashraf in corruption case

    • An anti-corruption court here on Thursday acquitted former Pakistan prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and nine others in a corruption case.
    • Ashraf, along with former finance minister Shaukat Tareen and eight others, was accused of causing losses of billions of rupees when their efforts to address the power shortage in the country through rental power projects failed.

    Growth in 2020-21 to depend on efficacy of stimulus: NCAER

    • Giving a wide-ranging forecast for GDP in the current fiscal, think-tank NCAER on Thursday said actual economic growth would depend on the effectiveness of the stimulus package announced by the government to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.
    • But for the stimulus announced by the government and the initiatives taken by the Reserve Bank, GDP in 2020-21 would have contracted by 12.4 per cent, the NCAER said in a report.

    Google to pay publishers for news content, in shift

    • While details of the plan were not known, the move could represent a significant shift by the internet giant and follows initiatives by Facebook and Apple to create news products in partnership with media outlets.
    • Google said it would pay media partners in three countries and cover the costs of pay-walled news sites to give users free access to a dedicated news app.
    • The program will begin with "local and national publications in Germany, Australia and Brazil" and is set to expand to more countries soon, the tech giant said.

    ICMR invites applications for validation of rapid antigen detection tests

    • The ICMR on Thursday invited applications for validation of rapid antigen detection tests for COVID-19 from all manufacturers who have developed such kits as part of its efforts to scale up testing capacity with faster diagnosis.
    • The rapid antigen test allows faster diagnosis without laboratory examination of samples and results are available within 30 minutes.

    • Developed in consultation with MoHFW and other stakeholders, the website aims to increase public participation and engage CSOs and NGOs.
    • It will become a repository of strategies and collaterals to practise Covid-safe behaviours in different sectors

    Fitch upgrades Reliance Industries' rating

    • Fitch Ratings on Thursday said it has upgraded Reliance Industries Ltd's rating to 'BBB+' from 'BBB' as the company's financial profile has improved following sale of nearly 25 per cent stake in Jio and Rs 53,124 crore equity raise.
    • "Fitch Ratings has upgraded India-based RIL's long-term local-currency issuer default rating (IDR) to 'BBB+' from 'BBB'. The Outlook is Stable," the ratings agency said in a statement.

    • India and Nepal are coordinating on a real time basis to minimise the damage due to flooding this monsoon season, the External Affairs Ministry said on Thursday, amid reports that the Himalayan nation is obstructing flood prevention-related works along the border with Bihar.
    • The MEA's assertion comes days after Bihar's Water Resources Minister Sanjay Kumar Jha said repair of embankments along the Indo-Nepal border in the state has been adversely affected as barricades put up by the neighbouring country is hindering personnel from crossing over to complete the work.
