Thane: Fake funeral video of NCP corporator goes viral, kin allege targeted harassment

THANE: The Kalwa police has registered a case against an unidentified person allegedly for circulating a fabricated video of a funeral of a man by mentioning the fake worth of the late NCP corporator Mukund Keni’s properties.
Mukund Keni, a sitting corporator of Thane Municipal Corporation and husband of the leader of opposition Pramila Keni, passed away on 10 June due to corona infection.

The police said, based on the complaint Mandar Keni, who is the son of the deceased, a defamation case was also registered.
In the 1.35 minutes clip, it can be seen that a body was brought in a cemetery and the last rights being performed with the body wrapped in plastic in an ambulance of the municipal corporation and to be set on fire on a funeral pyre.
Also, the Covid warriors dawned the PPE kits are bringing the body on the pyre. This video is along with the caption that states that Rs 1,500 cr property of TMC corporator which according to the complainant is fabricated went viral on social media.
In his complaint, Mandar Keni stated, “This is a very serious issue about a person who has passed away and such clips have caused immense mental distress and agony to me and my family and disrepute to my father".
"Recently, a friend of mine sent me the video along with the above tag line mentioned in the subject, which is an insult to the corporator,” Keni said.
"The property details are fake and it has been mentioned in the affidavit filed during the Thane civic body elections and available online. So people should verify before forwarding and disrespecting someone departed. Also, the cemetery is different as well as my father was cremated at an electric crematorium and brought in the private hospital ambulance. So this is mischief done by someone to cause mental harassment," he added.
The police said that the investigation is being carried out and the trail of the video will be conducted to find its origin but so far, there's no progress in the case.
