Siskiyous U17 squad goes 1-1 versus Tehama

The Siskiyous American Legion Post 122 U17 baseball team opened the 2020 season on Saturday at Hibbard Field in Yreka versus Tehama.

Siskiyous split against Tehama.

In game one, Siskiyous was down 7-3 the bottom of the seventh inning, when the resilient squad mounted a comeback. With two outs and two runnerss on base, Kobe Huston of Etna High smashed a double to right field to bring in both runners and give the Siskiyous U17 the dramatic  8-7 victory.

“It was a great game to open the season with,” head coach Russell  Morena said. “It was incredible to see the team get so excited.”

He said it was a wonderful sight to see the crowd erupt in applause and to have the team run onto the field in celebration.

Zane Anderson of Yreka High went 2-for-2 with two hits and two runs. Darius Smith of Mount Shasta High finished 1-for-2, scored twice a and was hit by a pitch twice, Smith also put his body on the line for the team in game two, as he was hit another two times. Huston finished 2-for-4 with two RBI’s.

In game two, Siskiyous started off strong and were up for the majority of the game, before Tehama returned the favor and won 12-11.

Morena said while the team played well again overall, the pitching fell a bit flat in the final few innings and gave up runs.

Siskiyous finished with 15 stolen bases in both games,

Overall, Morena, who is in his first year as head coach of the U17 likes the talent and potential of his squad this season.

“They came out ready to play on Saturday,” he said.”We really do have a group of dedicated and talented players who love to go out and play baseball.”

This week, Siskiyous is set to play in a tournament on the coast in Arcata starting Thursday
