Lightning kills 24 in Uttar Pradesh; CM Yogi Adityanath extends relief

LUCKNOW: At least 24 persons lost their lives across UP due to heavy rain and lightning as monsoon finally covered all of UP on Thursday. Several areas, especially west UP and eastern UP regions bordering Nepal, reported heavy to very heavy showers.
In Deoria, nine persons lost their lives due to lightning, followed by six in Prayagraj, three in Ambedkarnagar and two in Barabanki.
Lightning also claimed the lives of one person each in Kushinagar, Fatehpur, Unnao and Balrampur. The relief commissioner's office reported that 24 persons were also injured, largely after being struck by lightning. One person was injured in Mau after a wall collapsed due to heavy rain.
The CM has directed that Rs 4 lakh be given as compensation to families of each of the deceased.
Meanwhile, as the monsoon covered the remaining parts of UP on Thursday, widespread rains were reported from across the state. Highest 83.4 mm rainfall was reported from Rae Bareli followed by 43.2 mm in Bareilly, 42 mm in Bahraich, 35.8 mm in Sultanpur and 33.4 mm in Lucknow.
