Newman University in Birmingham is offering a full university experience in September 2020 - see all the benefits of staying local

Inspired by the teaching of its patron Saint John Henry Newman , who developed the tutorial system adopted by the world’s leading universities, Newman's focus on creating a vibrant academic community - built on a combination of small-group study supported by larger lectures - means it is well placed to offer a fully-rounded university experience, despite coronavirus restrictions.

From September this year, it plans to offer all first-year students a bespoke mix of face-to-face and online learning, supported by digital resources, virtual and real-life social opportunities.

With over 90% of Newman students typically coming from the local area, staying local means you won’t miss out on social aspects of your time at university either.

Living and studying locally gives you the advantage of being near your family and friends, maintaining your social life and being able to juggle any outside responsibilities and activities - all while making new friends and setting yourself up for a even brighter future.

Located in one of the youngest and most diverse cities in the country, Newman University is home to approximately 2,700 students from a wide variety backgrounds.

While the university is founded on the traditions of Catholic social teaching - emphasising human dignity, social justice and a commitment to the common good - as a friendly, single-campus institution, it welcomes students of all backgrounds, regardless of religious belief, race or ethnicity.

A vibrant learning community, it is home to many mature students, disabled students, those from low-participation neighbourhoods and those with family and caring responsibilities, supporting students to transform their lives and, in turn, transform society.

The tutorial system - the key to delivering a full university experience

Newman University is planning to provide a combination of on-site tutorials and face-to-face learning opportunities supported by digital lectures and course resources for all first-year students from September, helping new students immerse themselves in their courses and student life to the full.

The fact that many courses at Newman are built around the tutorial system - which sees small groups of students study together, engaging in multi-way dialogue with their lecturers and peers - lends itself more easily to the social distancing requirements of the coronavirus crisis, while digital technologies support delivery of larger lectures and cross-course modules.

The tutorial approach was devised by the university’s patron, Saint John Henry Newman, and is noted for the high quality of education it enables, encouraging students to become active participants in their learning and active contributors to a wider academic community, not simply recipients of information cascaded by lecturers.

As part of a wider programme of personal and larger-group learning, the approach has made Newman graduates sought after in their specialist fields, enjoying consistently high further study and graduate-employment rates.
