China will have to pay a heavy price for military misadventure in eastern Ladakh: Experts

    • China will have to pay a "heavy price" for decades for resorting to aggressive military behaviour towards India in eastern Ladakh as it will isolate the country globally, strategic affairs experts said on Saturday.
    • They said the economic cost of China's misadventure in the last couple of months in eastern Ladakh and South China will be "massive" as it has "exposed" Beijing's "real face" when the entire world is fighting coronavirus.
    • The experts have also referred to China's tariff war with the US, growing bickering with Australia on trade-related issues and the fast deteriorating situation in Hong Kong.

Kangana Ranaut calls for boycotting all Chinese products

    • Days after the face-off with Chinese troops at Ladakh's Galwan valley in which 20 Indian Army soldiers lost their lives, actor Kangana Ranaut on Saturday urged Indians to completely boycott Chinese goods and becoming 'atmanirbhar' (self-reliant).
    • In a nearly 2-minute-long video that the 'Queen' actor's team shared on Twitter, she urges people to support the soldiers and the government against China.
    • As the video begins, Kangana talks about the pain of a part of Indian land being taken away comparing to a part of the human body being ripped off.
    • "What kind of pain will you go through if somebody tries to rip off our fingers from our hands or our hands from the arm? the same intensity of pain has been caused by China on us after it tried capturing Ladakh from us (India)," she says in Hindi.
    • Invoking Mahatma Gandhi, Ranaut then urges people to boycott Chinese goods in India and support the government in its "war".

India needs a long-term strategy to counter China

    • Experts say China's manoeuvres along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) are aimed at securing strategic gains in the area, as it invests heavily in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor - a BRI project - that snakes through Aksai Chin and Pak-occupied Kashmir towards Gwadar, near the Persian Gulf.
    • That means talks aimed at disengagement, though crucial, can only achieve so much. India needs a long-term strategy to counter China - one that requires partners and thus multilateralism (as against protectionism).
    • Donald Trump's transactional approach to foreign policy is also a concern. An explosive tell-all by John Bolton, Trump's former national security adviser, alleges that the US President was "pleading with" Xi Jinping to increase agricultural purchases from the US to improve his electoral prospects in the farm states. Also, in an interview with Axios, Trump said he held off on sanctions against China over the Uighur issue because "we were in the middle of a major trade deal".

    China vs USA

    • China’s military assertiveness reflects a growing sense of confidence and capability, but also one of confrontation, particularly with the United States over the pandemic, the fate of Hong Kong and other issues that China considers central to its sovereignty and national pride.
    • China claims all of its recent operations are defensive, but each increases the risk of a military clash, whether intended or not. That appears to be what happened on the night of June 15, when Chinese and Indian soldiers fought along their disputed border in the Himalayas.
    • China has long acted forcefully to defend the country’s territory and interests, but it is now operating with greater military firepower than ever before.

Shiv Sena slams BJP over RGF donations charge amid China standoff

    • The Shiv Sena on Saturday hit out at the BJP over its charge that the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) had accepted donations from the Chinese embassy, and asked it whether the issue had any connection with intrusion by the neighbouring country in Ladakh and the martyrdom of 20 Indian soldiers.
    • The Sena also alleged that those raising questions against the government over the standoff with China were being labelled as Chinese agents by the BJP.
    • BJP chief J P Nadda had on Thursday targeted the Congress and the Gandhi family saying that the RGF had allegedly accepted donations from the Chinese embassy. Hitting back, the Congress had said that the RGF issue raised by the BJP government was a "manufactured charge" and "diversionary tactic" to deflect attention from the LAC crisis.

China's actions in Ladakh part of large-scale military provocations against neighbours: US lawmaker

    • China's recent aggression in eastern Ladakh is part of its large-scale military provocations against its neighbours and the US will not stand for unprovoked, premeditated military action for intimidating peaceful nations into submission, an influential American lawmaker has said.
    • Congressman Ted Yoho said that now is the time for the world to come together and tell China that enough is enough.
    • “China's actions towards India fall in line with a larger trend of the Communist Party of China using the confusion of the COVID-19 pandemic as a cover to launch large scale military provocations against its neighbours in the region, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Vietnam,” Yoho said on Friday.
    • In a tweet, the Republican lawmaker said that the US will not stand for unprovoked, premeditated military action for the purpose of antagonising and intimidating peaceful nations into submission.
    • “Now is the time for the world to come together and tell China that enough is enough,” Yoho said.

    China's deception warfare

    • China being the proponent of deception warfare, this time it uses timidity and confusion as tools against India along with direct and indirect methods of warfare. Timidity, when its media mouthpieces especially the Global Times Editor-in-Chief, Hu Xijin, actively posts on his Twitter handle alleging India’s intention to malign China, blaming India for being the aggressor by moulding/twisting facts suiting his country’s narrative. Confusion, as it uses India’s democratic setup and the many voices, difference of opinions etc to its advantage. Directly, it engages with the Indian forces along the LAC and indirectly China utilises social media to increase its sphere of influence by waging psychological and information warfare.

    Chidambaram ups the ante

    • Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday launched an attack on BJP chief JP Nadda, accusing him of being an expert in "speaking half-truths" and said that Rs 20 lakhs deposited in the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation "from PM National Relief Fund in 2005 was for tsunami relief work in Andaman and Nicobar."
    • This comes in response to the allegations by the BJP chief made on Friday in the wake of the Opposition raising questions on the government's position over the standoff with China at the LAC. Taking to Twitter, Nadda shared details of 'Partner Organisation and Donors Year 2005-2006' and 'Partner Organisation and Donors Year 2007-2008', which shows that PMNRF donated funds to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF).
    • In a series of tweets on Saturday morning, Chidambaram accused the BJP of unnecessarily attempting to draw parallels between China's intrusion which took place recently and the events which had taken place 15 years ago.

    China's aggressive push

    • China is continuing to aggressively push its claim at "Patrolling Point-14" in Galwan Valley region, the site of the bloody clashes on June 15, where the PLA is demanding Indian troops must not cross the confluence of the Shyok and Galwan rivers.
    • Similarly, PLA soldiers continue to occupy the "Finger-4 to 8" area (mountainous spurs stretching over a distance of 8km) on the north bank of Pangong Tso since early-May, having built dozens of fortifications and taking the heights to dominate the area there.
    • But the Indian Army remains firm it will not yield to China's attempt to grab more area in both Galwan and Pangong Tso areas, and is pressing for restoration of status quo as it existed in April.

'PLA unlikely to risk an all-out offensive'

    • The assessment as of now is that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is "unlikely to risk an all-out offensive" despite all its muscle-flexing by amassing troops and heavy weaponry along the unresolved Line of Actual Control (LAC), especially in the strategically located Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO)-Depsang area, sources said.
    • With India too deploying thousands of additional troops backed by tanks, infantry combat vehicles and howitzers in the region, and IAF fighters like Sukhoi-30 MKIs and MiG-29s regularly patrolling the skies, "criticalities in full operational preparedness" that existed before have been plugged. "We are well-poised in the forward areas with a strong military posture, with more troops and weaponry positioned in the depth areas," a source said.
    • But face-offs and clashes cannot be ruled out due to tensions running high on the ground, especially in the Pangong Tso and Galwan Valley regions, though the rival troops are maintaining "stand-off distances" from each other.

India keeps vigilant eye on Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir as Chinese air activity increases

    • India is keeping a vigilant eye on airbases in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) after a Chinese refueller aircraft landed in Skardu last week. Also, Chinese air activity has increased opposite Eastern Ladakh, raising the possibility of PLA Air Force (PLAAF) using airbases in PoK.
    • Indian and Chinese forces are in the middle of an escalating standoff in Eastern Ladakh with New Delhi forced to bring in a large number of troops in the area after Beijing amassed forces, which were otherwise supposed to be undergoing annual military exercises.
    • The Indian Air Force has been on heightened alert for several weeks now and extensive ferry missions have been undertaken to take supplies and troops to Ladakh. Besides, Chinese air activity – additional Su 27 fighters are believed to have been deployed at Hotan airbase in Xinjiang – is being closely monitored and their deployments mirrored on the Indian side.

Indian Army alert to PLA build-up in hotspot Depsang

    • India is keeping a close watch on China’s military mobilisation in the Depsang Plains region, a major hotspot after Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley and Hot Springs areas, which can conceivably threaten a vast swathe of Indian territory in north-eastern Ladakh. Army chief General M M Naravane, during his trip to forward areas of eastern Ladakh over the last couple of days, directed further strengthening of patrolling to the 65 points on the Line of Actual Control to plug all gaps, while reviewing the operational situation in all sectors from Daulat Beg Oldie-Depsang in the north to Demchok-Chumar in the south.

India warns China that attempts to alter status quo will have ‘ripples, repercussions'

    • India on Friday warned China that trying to alter the status quo on the ground by resorting to force will not just damage the peace that existed on the border areas but can also have "ripples and repercussions" in the broader bilateral relationship, and demanded that Beijing stop its activities in eastern Ladakh.
    • The only way to resolve the current military standoff along the LAC in eastern Ladakh was for Beijing to realise that trying to "change the status quo by resorting to force or coercion, is not the right way forward,” India's ambassador to China Vikram Misri said.

    • The two sides are engaged in diplomatic and military talks amidst escalating tension following the violent clashes in Galwan Valley on June 15. Twenty Indian Army personnel were killed in the clash.
