    PIA tries to allay global concerns over pilot licenses

    • Pakistan's national carrier has written to foreign missions and regulatory bodies to inform them it has grounded 141 pilots suspected of obtaining licenses through unfair means in a bid to allay global concerns over the issue,officials said on Saturday.
    • The issue of commercial pilots possessing dubious licences came to light after the preliminary probe report of the Karachi plane crash blamed the pilots and the air traffic control for the tragedy that killed 97 people.

    Employees allowed to claim I-T exemption on conveyance allowance under new tax regime: CBDT

    • The government has allowed individuals under new lower tax regime to claim I-T exemption on conveyance allowance received from employers.
    • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has now amended Income Tax rules to prescribe certain exemptions which can be availed by the employees.
    • These include any allowance granted to meet the cost of travel on tour or on transfer, any allowance, whether, granted on tour or for the period of journey in connection with transfer, to meet the ordinary daily charges incurred by an employee on account of absence from his normal place of duty.

    Early onset of monsoon triggers rainfall in most parts of India as locust attack fears increase

    • The early onset of monsoon triggered moderate-to-heavy rainfall across India on Saturday, barring a few places on the west coast, providing a breeding ground for the crop-threatening locusts that invaded the country via Pakistan towards the end of April.
    • Several areas in Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh reported locust attacks as authorities struggled to chase them away or kill them by spraying pesticides.
    • The short-horn hoppers even descended on Gurgaon near the national capital, where the humidity levels oscillated between 49 and 82 per cent. The Delhi government has put all its districts on alert as a small swarm covering 1 sq km can consume the food 35,000 people can eat in one day.

    Govt to launch floating rate savings bond from July 1

    • The government has decided to launch Floating Rate Savings Bonds 2020 (Taxable) from July 1, giving an opportunity to invest in secured government instruments.
    • The new scheme has been brought in place of 7.75 per cent Savings (Taxable) Bonds, 2018, which was withdrawn from the close of banking business on May 28, 2020, the finance ministry said in a statement.
    • The interest on the seven-year bond will be paid semi-annually on January 1 and July 1 every year.
    • The interest on January 1, 2021 will be paid at 7.15 per cent.

    • The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted business models of insurance companies, which have seen degrowth, IFFCO-TOKIO General Insurance said on Saturday

    NTPC Q4 net profit decline 70% to Rs 1,523 cr on higher tax provision

    • State-run power major NTPC on Saturday reported over 70 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit at Rs 1,523.77 crore in the March quarter mainly due to higher tax provision under the ‘Vivad Se Vishwas' scheme.
    • The consolidated net profit of the company stood at Rs 5,161.39 crore for the corresponding quarter last fiscal, a regulatory filing said.
    • Total income was Rs 31,315.32 crore in the period under review, compared to Rs 26,116.15 crore in the year-ago period.

    RBI extends enhanced borrowing limit under MSF till Sep 30

    • Amid the ongoing economic woes created by the coronavirus pandemic, the Reserve Bank has decided to extend the enhanced borrowing facility provided to the banks to meet their liquidity shortages till September 30.

    • Jammu and Kashmir police said on Saturday that 29 foreign terrorists are active in South Kashmir but assured that the security forces are experienced enough to deal with them and wipe out militancy from whole of South Kashmir.
    • "There is a presence of foreign terrorists in the upper reaches of Kokernag, Tral and Khrew. There are about 29 foreign terrorists active in South Kashmir and we will neutralise them when they come down and our sources inform us (about them)," Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said.
