Covid-19: Dakshina Kannada records single biggest spike of 97 cases, 3 deaths

Dakshina Kannada district recorded its highest ever spike of 97 Covid19 positive cases on Sunday, a day that Karnataka recorded its biggest 24-hour spike of 1267 positive cases. The three deaths that DK district recorded on the day added to the unenviable fact that the 97 cases saw DK second in list of districts behind Bengaluru Urban that recorded 783 cases. Udupi was fourth in the day’s list with 40 cases behind Ballari’s 71.

MANGALURU/UDUPI: Dakshina Kannada district recorded its highest ever spike of 97 Covid19 positive cases on Sunday, a day that Karnataka recorded its biggest 24-hour spike of 1267 positive cases. The three deaths that DK district recorded on the day added to the unenviable fact that the 97 cases saw DK second in list of districts behind Bengaluru Urban that recorded 783 cases. Udupi was fourth in the day’s list with 40 cases behind Ballari’s 71.
The three deaths that DK recorded were of a 48-year-old-female (P-11386), 31-year-old male (P-12391) and 51-year-old-female (P-12398).
All three victims succumbed to severe acute respiratory infection (SARI). Co-morbidities in the last two victims – fever, breathlessness hypothyroidism and obesity in case of the 31-year-old, fever, breathlessness, diabetes mellitus and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the 51-year-old, hastened their end.
Out of the 97 cases reported during the day, 32 arrived from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and one from Mumbai, 21 were categorised as cases of influenza like illness (ILI) and five were cases of SARI. Source of how 28 others contracted the disease is being traced while 10 others are primary contacts of other patients, DC Sindhu B Rupesh, said. As on date, total positive cases in DK has gone up to 663 with 238 deaths and total fatalities are up at 13.
In Udupi, out of 40 cases, 15 are from those who came from Mumbai, two from Bengaluru, six are corona warriors (doctors and staff of PHC), 16 primary contacts including a SSLC student who tested positive. The active cases in the district is now 126 and total cases that the district has recorded is 1179, deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha said. Two members of the SSLC student had tested positive earlier and the swab of the student was taken, he said.
MCC off limits for public

In a related development, Mangaluru City Corporation has decided to deny entry of public to its head office at Lalbagh. Mayor Diwakar in a communique stated that with increasing cases of corona and some of the staff and their family members either testing positive or being placed in quarantine, this step has become inevitable. The entire office will be sanitised, and staff sent on field duty for stricter monitoring of norms pertaining to social distancing, he said.
