PUNE: The Pune rural police have seized illicit liquor worth Rs 2 crore and arrested 850 persons involved in either production or transportation of illicit liquor in the past four months.
Police have registered a total of 911 cases against the suspects under the provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act.
Pune rural superintendent of police Sandeep Patil told TOI, "Our teams enhanced patrolling and vigilance on the state and the national highways passing through Pune district as soon as the lockdown was announced on March 24 ."
"We checked vehicles and checked the places where illicit liquor dens were being operated.
We found few vehicles involved in emergency services were also shipping the illicit liquor illegally. The teams continuously patrolled the highways in the district and intercepted the vehicles carrying liquor and cases were registered against them," he said.
Patil said that the drive to curb the activity was still on.
According to the police, there was a demand for the illicit liquor, especially from the fringe areas of the city, during the lockdown period. "Majority of the vehicles carrying illicit liquor were heading towards Pune city," the officer said.
Patil said that the police raided different places located along Solapur, Nashik, Satara and Ahmednagar highways where illicit liquor dens were in operation. "Substantial quantities of chemicals, large tumblers, and illicit liquor were found at these dens during the raids," he added.
