THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) started mapping a list of hot spots to enforce localised shutdowns this week even as Covid-19 cases in the city rose by 341 and settled at 8,168 patients on Sunday. Fatalities increased by 14 to reach 277.
Additional municipal commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh alerted residents of the lockdown plan in the pockets with high case numbers. "We are working out lockdowns in parts of Ghodbunder, Naupada, Kalwa and Mumbra and will announce the same after a detailed discussion with the police and the district administration," he said.

The TMC deployed 37 teams to sanitise the city with sodium hypochlorite.
Many residents, especially from areas that looked likely to be made containment zones, made frantic calls to their nearest grocery store. Many flocked to the shops.
Messages of an immediate lockdown spread like wildfire, fuelling the shopping spree. "We had heard of rising cases in our area so we tried to get adequate resources to last us in case the lockdown extends for a longer period," Basant Sarangi said from Hiranandani Estate.
A police official, who requested anonymity, said the force was opposed to a blanket shutdown and would like the focus to be on plugging loopholes and strengthening the vigil at hot spots.

The BJP said the administration was working in an autocratic manner and asked for a general body meeting.
Survey in Thane district shows 50% favour extended, stricter lockdown

The findings came from Local Circles, a community social media platform. The survey is from the middle of the month.
Total cases touched 28,944 on Friday and the death toll, 947.
A similar study was done for high virus load districts across the country, including Mumbai, and showed 64% of the participants favouring a renewed lockdown.
