MUMBAI: The
state government will register cases against the companies that had provided substandard
seeds to farmers, said
CM Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday. He made the announcement after several soyabean
farmers from Vidarbha and Marathwada complained that the seeds they had sown for the kharif season did not germinate, causing huge losses.
Thackeray added that the government will also seek compensation for the farmers from the firms.
"We will stand with our farmers. Strict action will be taken against the firms that had provided bogus or poor quality seeds," the CM said. He also gave an assurance that the government will soon cover the nearly 12 lakh farmers who had been left out of the
loan waiver scheme. The scheme had to be wound up due to lack of funds and the Covid-19 outbreak.
