    World Bank enhances support for rejuvenating Ganga, sanctions USD 400 mn

    • The World Bank on Monday said it has enhanced its support for Government of India's program to rejuvenate Ganga river with a USD 400 million (about Rs 3,000 crore) assistance that will help stem pollution in the river.

    Air Canada to suspend flights on 30 domestic routes due to pandemic hit

    • Air Canada said on Tuesday it would suspend flights on 30 domestic routes hit by persistent weak travel demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • The carrier forecast third-quarter capacity would decline at least 75% from a year ago and warned that travel restrictions and border closures were dimming prospects for a near-to-mid- term recovery.

    Direct investment rises in FY20, portfolio investment declines: RBI

    • Direct investment into the country rose by USD 19 billion while portfolio investment declined by USD 13.7 billion during 2019-20, according to the data on the International Investment Position (IIP) released by the Reserve Bank on Tuesday.
    • International financial assets of Indian residents increased by USD 73.9 billion due to the rise in reserve assets and overseas direct investment by USD 64.9 billion and USD 13.0 billion, respectively, though other investments declined marginally during the year, the RBI said in a release.
    • "Overall, net claims of non-residents on India declined by USD 57.6 billion during the year," it said.

    • Chinese researchers have issued an early warning over another potential pandemic caused by an influenza virus in pigs
    • The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak, the BBC reported.
    • While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has "all the hallmarks" of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring. As it is new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus.

    • Traders have since made calls to boycott Chinese goods, New Delhi has delayed Chinese imports at ports and on Monday, in its strongest move yet, India banned nearly five dozen Chinese apps including TikTok. The technology ministry said the apps were a threat to India's sovereignty and security.

    Global employment crisis deepening, equivalent of 400 mn jobs lost: UN

    • The coronavirus crisis has taken a much heavier toll on jobs than previously feared, the UN said Tuesday, warning that the situation in the Americas was particularly dire.
    • In a fresh study, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that by the mid-year point, global working hours were down 14 percent compared to last December -- equivalent to some 400 million full-time jobs.
    • That is more than double the number forecast by the UN organisation back in April, when it expected 6.7 percent of working hours to be lost by the end of the second three-month period of the year.

    Housing prices index up 3.9% in Q4 of 2019-20 on an annual basis: RBI

    • All-India housing prices index rose by 3.9 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2019-20 compared to the year ago period, but contracted 0.2 per cent compared to the previous quarter, the RBI said on Tuesday.

    China says India's ban on Chinese apps may violate WTO rules

    • China said on Tuesday that India's move to ban 59 Chinese-origin mobile apps could be a breach of World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, and urged New Delhi to create an open and fair business environment.
    • "India's measure selectively and discriminatorily aims at certain Chinese apps on ambiguous and far-fetched grounds, runs against fair and transparent procedure requirements, abuses national security exceptions and (is suspected of) violating WTO rules," Ji Rong, spokesman at the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, said in a statement.
    • India banned the apps on Monday, its strongest move against China in the online space since fighting erupted on the two countries' border this month.

    • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) on Tuesday reported its first-ever quarterly loss after it took an impairment on slumping prices and hoped the government will free gas prices to end the era of unremunerative rates.
    • India's top oil and gas producer reported a Rs 3,098 crore loss in the January-March quarter as compared to a profit of Rs 4,240 crore in the same period a year back.

    • Five garment manufacturing units and three private firms were allotted land along the Yamuna Expressway in Gautam Buddh Nagar on Tuesday, in a move likely to fetch investments worth Rs 50 crore and create 2,000 jobs in the region, officials said.
    • The allotted land pieces are in Sector 29 and 22 E managed by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) and close to the upcoming international Greenfield airport in Jewar.
    • As much as 9,500 sq metre (2.34 acre) land has been allotted to five readymade garment units in Sector 29 as part of the Apparel Park project, the officials said.

    Fitch cuts India growth projection to 8% for FY22; economy to shrink by 5 pc this fiscal

    • Fitch Ratings on Tuesday cut India's growth forecast for 2021-22 fiscal to 8 per cent from 9.5 per cent projected last month. It, however, retained its projection of Indian economy contracting by 5 per cent in the current fiscal.
