Dharavi model to be implemented in northern suburbs of Mumbai

Once a COVID-19 hotspot, the authorities have managed to control the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Dharavi which is one of Asia’s biggest slums in Mumbai. As per the official record, the doubling rate of Dharavi has doubled than that of the entire city’s. 

However, the new hotspots including Andheri, Jogeshwari, Kandivali and Borivali have emerged in North Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to implement the ‘Dharavi mode’ in six suburbs in north Mumbai. 

The screening has been initiated for around 25 lakh people residing in Andheri East, Andheri West, Borivali, Kandivali, Dahisar and Malad. In some areas, the screening has already started. Along with this, mobile clinics have also been places in these areas and people are also being home quarantined. 

Nearly 16 health camps have been organised in the past few days in Dahisar, Borivali and Kandivali areas under ‘Mission Zero’ initiated by the BMC. The mobile vans have started the screening process for thousands. 

The number of COVID-19 cases is increasing in Ward R South (Kandivali), Ward R Central (Borivali) and Ward R North (Dahisar) which falls under Zone 7 of the civic body. The BMC is sealing the entire building if a COVID-19 case in found and additional strictness is being implemented in the containment zones. 

The BMC has expressed confidence that the situation in the northern suburbs of Mumbai will be under control with the intensive programme called ‘Mission Zero’. The civic body is using coronavirus rapid testing kits against high-risk suspects. 

The Dharavi model is based on 4-Ts which is tracing, tracking, testing and treating. The 4-Ts model will also be used in the areas in north Mumbai to contain the spread of the coronavirus.  

Maharashtra has been the worst-hit state in India due to the coronavirus outbreak. As of June 29, the number of cases in the state has risen to 1,69,883 and the death toll has reached 7,610. In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases has increased 76,765 while the death toll in the financial capital has touched 4,463.
