HYDERABAD: All common entrance tests (CETs) such as Eamcet and Lawcet have been postponed in the wake of a sharp surge in Covid-19 cases in Telangana.
The government informed this to the high court on on Tuesday. Advocate general BS Prasad stated the government position to a bench of Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy when the court was hearing a PIL.
The judges also sought to know from the Telangana State Council of Higher Education and universities whether they would dispense with exams for PG and UG courses, for now.
The judges, quoting media reports on government’s plans to re-impose a lockdown in Hyderabad, said their views on exams will have a direct link with this decision and hence wanted the AG to first ascertain from the government if there would be a lockdown in the immediate future. To this, the state counsel took some time and got back to the court with a message that the government was postponing all the CETs, including typewriting and short-hand exams, scheduled to be held in July.
Petitioner B Venkata Narasing Rao also questioned the decision of various universities to conduct exams. Petitioner’s counsel C Damodar Reddy expressed apprehensions over the decision to go ahead with the exams, saying this was fraught with serious consequences in view of the pandemic.
Students will be given options: JNTU
Advocate Dharmesh DK Jaiswal, representing JNTU, Hyderabad, told the bench that their varsity had already sent a proposal to the higher education department stating that the average marks of first seven semesters and the eighth semester would be taken and grades allotted for promotion.
“If the students are not satisfied with their grades, they will be given an option to write the exams at a later stage. This proposal was forwarded by the higher education department to TSCHE to ascertain the views of all other universities,” he said. The bench directed TSCHE and universities to respond on this proposal by July 9.
