BHUBANESWAR: Director general of police Abhay on Wednesday dismissed the suspended inspector-in-charge of Biramitrapur police station Ananda Majhi for allegedly raping a minor girl inside the police station for several months recently. On the Tuesday, Abhay ordered Crime Branch probe into the sensational crime. "The former IIC's conduct was shameful. Our apologies to the young girl," DGP tweeted on Wednesday.

The Crime Branch inquiry came amid the growing public outcry over the sensational offence, the charges of gang-rape against none other than the police and attempt by the cops to hush up the case. “Our team of four officers, headed by a lady deputy superintendent of police, who is the investigating officer, already started their probe. A superintendent of police from the Crime Branch has also gone there to monitor the investigation,” additional director general of police (Crime Branch) Soumendra Priyadarshi said.
Six persons, including two police personnel—Biramitrapur police station’s former inspector-in-charge Anand Chandra Majhi and another staff of the same police station—have been accused of gang-raping a 13-year-old local tribal girl inside the police station for several weeks and forcing her to go for abortion.
The matter came to the light after the child, who was seen crying outside the police station a few days ago, was rescued by a local NGO and later handed over to the child welfare committee (CWC) in Sundargarh. The girl told the CWC that she had come to Biramitrapur to watch a local fair a few days before lockdown in March. While she was waiting to catch an auto-rickshaw to return her home, which was around 22 km from the fair site, the Biramitrapur police patrolling van spotted her and took her to the police station where Majhi allegedly raped her. She alleged that the local police dropped her in her village. But Majhi often allegedly called her to the police station and sexually assaulted her. The police station’s another staff (whose identity is yet to be ascertained) assisted him in the alleged offence for several weeks. She also alleged that her step father, two other local persons and a doctor forced her to abort her foetus.
Majhi was placed under suspension on June 26. No arrest has so far been made in the case. Majhi was immediately unavailable for comment. Police sources said three accused persons of the case are on the run. However, the police did not confirm whether those on the run included the two cops, who have been booked in the case.
Meanwhile, former MLA of Biramitrapur and Congress leader George Tirkey has threatened for Birmitrapur bandh on July 2 if the culprits in this case are arrested at the earliest.
