MUMBAI: The
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an
orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for the weekend indicating heavy to very heavy rains likely at isolated places. This is likely to bring some relief for the city which is yet to witness a continuing downpour.
The
southwest monsoon officially covered Mumbai on June 14, but so far there has been only one intense rain spell on June 18. Weather officials said that the rain forecast was owing to an offshore trough from North Maharashtra coast to Karnataka coast that persists.
"Konkan region including Mumbai is likely to get increased rainfall on July 2-3, leading to heavy rainfall," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), IMD.
This week except for Monday night when the island city reported heavy rains of over 100 mm, there has been very light rains reported in the 24 hours between June 30-July 1 with the
IMD Colaba observatory recording 6 mm rainfall and IMD Santacruz observatory 9.4 mm of rains. Due to this there is still a shortfall in the rain that should have been reported till now. The total rainfall reported from June 1 so far by the IMD Colaba observatory has been 530.5mm and IMD Santacruz observatory 404.4mm.
