RAJKOT: Two lion cubs aged between 6-7 months drowned in a well in a village of Gir Somnath district on Tuesday night. The forest department were informed in the morning and the carcasses were sent for post-mortem.
According to forest department, a farmer Vipul Bhikha in Maliya wildlife range which falls in revenue area of Jujarpur village of Chorvad informed forest department that two lion cubs have fallen in the well of his farm.
The primary reason of death is drowning in water. Dheeraj Mittal deputy conservator of forest Gir (west) division said “The water level in well is increased because of recent rainfall, the lion cubs were young and could not swim. When we got the information our staff reached and found them dead.”
This is the revenue area and wild animal’s movement is common here. According to forest department, the mother of cub is also in the same area and they are trying to locate the lioness. It's possible that lioness might be in shock. Generally a lioness leaves her cub in a safe a place and goes for hunting and sometimes comes back after 2-3 days. It's believed that the cubs fell in well while playing. There was no parapet wall surrounding the well as per forest rule and that’s why they fell into it accidently.
