Karnataka: 106 people including ACP test positive in DK, Udupi, 3 more succumb to Covid-19

An assistant commissioner of police was among the 106 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Wednesday. While DK district accounted for 84 of these cases, neighbouring Udupi tallied 22 cases.

MANGALURU/UDUPI: An assistant commissioner of police was among the 106 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Wednesday. While DK district accounted for 84 of these cases, neighbouring Udupi tallied 22 cases. The death toll continued to mount in DK district with 3 more people succumbing to the disease since Tuesday night taking the overall toll to 17 and 20 in the two coastal districts.
City police commissioner Vikash Kumar confirmed that ACP was among the three policemen who contracted the disease.
With two accused in a case testing positive, the Bajpe police station where they were brought was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure and the station is being sanitized, the city police chief told TOI, adding that as on date 114 policemen in the city police commissionerate have been placed under home quarantine.
In DK, 38 out of 84 reported cases are primary contacts, 28 are cases of influenza like illness, six among those who returned from Sharjah and one an inter-state passenger. Contacts of 11 patients is being traced including four whose cases were detected from pre-surgery samples, DC Sindhu B Rupesh said. Two septuagenarians who died had co-morbid condition. A 31-year-old youth to die was categorised ‘coincidental finding Covid positive’.
The office of deputy commissioner that also has the offices of district minister Kota Shrinivasa Poojari and Dakshina Kannada member of parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel will be off limits for general public from July 3 to 5 as they will be sanitized during this period, Sindhu said. The health authorities discharged a patient on the day. Active cases in DK has now risen to 372 and total positive cases to 823. In all, 444 patients have been discharged thus far.
Sixteen primary contacts, four returnees from Maharashtra and one each from Dubai and Hyderabad made up the 22 cases that Udupi district reported on the day, G Jagadeesha, Udupi DC said. The total positive cases in Udupi is now 1228 out of which 1069 have been discharged thus far, he said, adding the district has 156 active cases on hand. Health authorities are awaiting reports on 397 swab samples, Jagadeesha added.
