RAJKOT: Two lion cubs, aged around 6-7 months, drowned in a well in a village of Gir-Somnath district on Tuesday night. The forest department was informed by locals in the morning and the carcasses were sent for post mortem.
According to forest department, farmer Vipul Bhikha, whose farm falls in Maliya wildlife range in the revenue area of Jujarpur village of Chorvad, informed the forest department about the two lion cubs that had fallen in a well of his farm.

The primary reason is of death is drowning in water.
“The water level in well is increased because of recent rainfall, and the cubs were too young to be able to swim. Adult lions can, however, stay afloat in a well. Our staff reached the place and found the cubs dead,” Dheeraj Mittal deputy conservator of forest Gir (west) division said.
Movement of wild animals is common in this revenue area as it is adjacent to the forest area. According to Junagadh forest department, the lioness, which must be in shock after losing the cubs, must be somewhere in the same area and the department is trying to locate it.
Generally a lioness leaves her cubs at a safe a place while she goes for hunting and at times may even return after 2-3 days.
Foresters believed that the cubs may have fallen in the well while playing as the well does not have a parapet wall surrounding it, flouting the forest department rule, said officials.
