AHMEDABAD: Two districts of the state – Ahmedabad and Surat – accounted for 82% and 75% of total Covid-19 cases in the months of May and June, respectively. These districts also saw 89.4% and 85% of the total deaths in these two months.
But while Ahmedabad – which has been identified as a national hotspot for Covid-19 – recorded a dip in cases and deaths in June, Surat recorded three times the number of cases and two times the deaths in June, compared to May.
On June 30, for the first time, Surat district and city saw more fresh cases than Ahmedabad. While Surat’s total was 199, Ahmedabad recorded 197.

Surat, on the other hand, recorded 3,209 cases and 89 deaths in June, significantly more than the 1,006 cases and 44 deaths recorded in May.
Ahmedabad is still far ahead in terms of overall numbers of cases and deaths. In terms of deaths, June had 43.8% of the total deaths, May 44.6%, followed by 11.2% in April and 0.4% in March.
