Karnataka: MLA among 104 people in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi to test positive for Covid-19

MANGALURU/UDUPI: Mangaluru City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty was among 1502 persons across Karnataka to test positive for coronavirus on Thursday, making him the first MLA in Karnataka to test so. Dakshina Kannada also recorded its single biggest one-day spike of 90 cases, second behind Bengaluru Urban district that also notched a record high of 889 cases. Udupi recorded 14 positive cases to take the tally of the coastal districts of 104.
While Dr Shetty tweeted to confirm that he had tested positive, was recovering and would be under treatment for a few days, the district administration also confirmed that district health and family welfare officer, Mangaluru taluk health officer and head of the Covid19 lab at district Wenlock Hospital too had contracted the disease.
The day also saw Dakshina Kannada record its 18th fatality, a 48-year-old-woman from Bantwal, to the global pandemic.
Out of the 90 cases recorded in Dakshina Kannada district, 31 are primary contacts, 19 are cases of influenza-like illness (ILI), source of how 15 patients contracted the disease is being traced, eight were diagnosed with severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), two are patients with pre-surgery samples whose contact is being traced and 15 are those who returned from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Dubai, deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said.
The district health authorities also discharged 33 people post-treatment taking the total number of those discharged to 477. The day’s spurt took the total positive cases that DK has recorded to 913 and the authorities are now handling 428 active cases. In all, 14003 samples have been tested in DK out of which 923 including 10 from other districts have tested positive and the remaining 13080 samples negative, DC stated in the official district bulletin.
In Udupi, the 14 cases took the total positive cases to 1242 and active cases to 149. A total of 1090 people have been discharged as on date and the district has recorded 3 deaths. The 14 cases included four primary contacts, four returnees from Maharashtra, as many inter-district travellers (all from Bengaluru) and one from Kerala. The source of one patient is being traced, Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha, said in a bulletin.
