Tamil Nadu moved closer to the 1 lakh case milestone with the highest ever daily spike of 4,343 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday. The tally reached 98,392. While 41,047 people were still under treatment, the state reported 57 deaths in 24 hours, taking the toll to 1,321.
On Thursday, state’s hotspot, Chennai, recorded 2,027 new cases, and its adjoining districts -- Tiruvallur (164), Kancheepuram (112) and Chengalpet (171) -- together recorded 447 cases.
All districts, barring Ariyalur and Namakkal, recorded fresh cases. Perambalur, which had no cases on Wednesday, reported six cases.
In south, Madurai recorded 273 cases and Ramanathapuram registered 117 cases. Tiruvannamalai and Vellore, which recorded 170 and 138 fresh cases, were among the high incidence districts in the north. In central region, Kallakurichi reported 139 case while Salem recorded 88 cases. In addition, 73 people who returned from other states and abroad tested positive.
Of the 57 deaths reported on Thursday, Chennai had 35 deaths, Thiruvallur had five, Madurai had four, Ramanathapuram, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram had two each. Theni, Sivaganga, Tanjavur, Thenkasi, Tirunelveli recorded one death each.
Health minister C VIjayabaskar said a 750-bed hospital at the King Institute for Preventive Medicine will be inaugurated by chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami soon. The centre inside the Institute of Ageing will be a tertiary care centre with senior specialists, ventilators, beds with oxygen and highly trained nurses. “All these beds have adequate oxygen supply. We will be positing doctors, specialists and paramedical staff soon,” he said. The facility is likely to be used to isolate and treat the elderly, he said.
