Gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter on Friday, a day after he was arrested, while trying to flee from the custody of Uttar Pradesh police after the Special Task Force (STF) convoy met with an accident on their way back from Madhya Pradesh to Kanpur.

KANPUR: Gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter on Friday, a day after he was arrested, while trying to flee from the custody of Uttar Pradesh police after the Special Task Force (STF) convoy met with an accident on their way back from Madhya Pradesh to Kanpur.
According to reports, as the convoy reached Barra police circle in Kanpur, the vehicle in which Vikas was seated, overturned after skidding on the road due to heavy rains.

Dubey, along with an STF sub-inspector and two constables reportedly got injured in the mishap. As soon as Dubey was taken out of the vehicle, he snatched a rifle from the STF team and tried to fire at the police. He was injured in the retaliatory firing, said JN Singh, ADG Kanpur range.
Dubey was rushed to the Hallett Hospital for treatment where he was declared dead by doctors.
CHAUBEYPUR ENCOUNTER
Eight Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police, were killed and seven others injured in an encounter with Vikas Dubey and his henchmen on the intervening night of July 2 and 3. A police team was approaching to arrest Dubey, a history-sheeter, in Bikru village under the Chaubeypur police station when they came under heavy fire from the criminals.

Vikas Dubey, who entered into the world of crime after a murder case in 1990, has over 60 criminal cases registered against him.
RISE INTO PROMINENCE
In 2001, Dubey gained prominence after his involvement in killing of Santosh Shukla, a former state (Uttar Pradesh) minister in the Rajnath Singh government, inside Shivli police station in 2001. He surrendered in before police in 2002, but he was acquitted due to lack of evidences. As per the reports, even policemen had refused to testify against him in the court.
HATCHING MURDER CONSPIRACIES FROM JAIL
In his early 50s, Dubey was also accused of planning his cousin brother Anurag's murder while being inside Mati jail in 2018. He was one of the four accused named by Anurag's wife.
POLITICAL LINKS
In 2002 during Mayawati government, Dubey strengthened his hold in the Bilhaur, Shivrajpur, Chaubepur, Rania areas of Kanpur. He won Nagar panchayat election from jail.
One of the reasons why Dubey had managed to escape the law for too long was because of his proximity to the local politicians.
