Arrest all involved in Thoothukudi custodial deaths: MK Stalin

The DMK president alleged that the FIR would not have been prepared but for the pressure from various quarters

DMK President M K Stalin demanded the inclusion of the names of each and every one involved in the murder of Jeyaraj and Bennix of Sathakulam in the First Information Report (FIR), being prepared on the case, and also their arrest.

The case had come this far to the level of filing an FIR only because of the intervention of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, despite the government attempt to sabotage it misusing its administrative and police powers, Stalin said in a statement on Thursday.

Due to pressure from various sides – protests by the people of southern Tamil Nadu, nation-wide closure of shops by traders bodies, voices raised at the global level by human rights activists, the continuous efforts of political parties like the DMK in raising the issue, the High Court orders and the evidence-based media coverage – the government found itself trapped in a legal trap, he said.

Otherwise, the government was trying to cover up the entire episode right from the beginning, Stalin alleged and added that the FIR would not have been prepared but for the pressure from various quarters.

Warning the government against stopping with the few arrests for the sake of it and making everything an eyewash, he said even the court would not allow the derailing of the case.

Urging the government to provide enough security to the head constable Revathy, who had testified in the case against the police personnel, and her family members and also the Kovilpatti magistrate Bharatidasan, Stalin said the government’s job was not over.

It should bring all the culprits to book and not try to save anybody, he said and added that the developments in the case would be continuously monitored by the people, political parties, social activists and traders.
