KANPUR: Deputy superintendent of police, Devendra Kumar Mishra, who was killed along with seven other police personnel in a fierce gun-battle with criminals on Thursday night, was about to retire in March next year.
The family of the slain officer, who hailed from Banda district, said that he had joined the police force 1980 as an SI. He got promoted to deputy SP rank while he was serving as an inspector in Modi nagar police area of Ghaziabad district.
"In Kanpur, he had served as an inspector in Railbazar , Naziarabad, Kidwai nagar, Moolganj and Barra police stations," his colleague told TOI.
A pall of gloom meanwhile descended at the Swarup Nagar apartment where Mishra used to live with his family. The family members of the officer were inconsolable. Several relatives from Banda reached the martyr's house on Friday and tried to console his wife Astha and daughters -- Vaishnavi and Vaishardi. While Vaishnavi is preparing for medical exams, Vaishardi is pursuing her class XII.
His neighbours described him as a cool and humble person who always had a smile on his face. The family members said Mishra was a helpful person always ready to support anybody.
