LUCKNOW: The opposition parties slammed the UP government over the botched up Kanpur police encounter in which eight policemen were killed on thursday night.
Calling the demise of the policemen tragic, former chief minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav dubbed the incident as 'one of the shameful examples of the nexus between ruling government and criminals'.
"This is the most shameful incident in the world of crime in UP where the nexus between ruling government and criminals, the price of which was paid by eight policemen."
He stated that those behind the incident must be exposed.
He also demanded compensation for the family members of the slain policemen.
Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and former CM Mayawati said that the incident was extremely disturbing and unfortunate. "It is clear that the UP government needs to pull up its socks in matters of law and order. The government must not spare the criminals at any cost," she said in a tweet besides demanding a job of the family members of the deceased policemen.
Congress national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the law and order situation in UP was in a mess.

"The CM holds the office of home department and is responsible for law and order. He must act strongly against the gory incident and tolerate no laxity at any cost," she said.
Former congress president and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi said that the incident was a proof of the prevalent 'goondaraj' in UP. "When the police are not safe, the state of common people can be guessed," Rahul said, extending condolences to the family besides hoping for speedy recovery of the injured.
Aam Aadmi Party MP and party's UP in charge Sanjay Singh said that UP government's claims of having wiped out organised crime from the state had fallen flat in light of Friday's incident.
"Even local administration seems to be scared of these criminals who are running a parallel government in the state. The government can file an FIR against a journalist who spoke about the mid-day meal but could do nothing to this criminal who had been roaming free for 2.5 years," he said.
