PANAJI: All Class IX and XI students, who were eligible to answer supplementary exams for the academic year 2019-20, have been promoted to Class X and XII respectively, Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has said in a circular issued on Friday. This means that only students who have failed in one or two subjects in Class IX and XI will be eligible to be promoted to a higher class.
Earlier, chief minister Pramod Sawant, after a meeting with education officials, had already announced that it has been decided to cancel the supplementary exams held every year in June for students of Class IX and XI due to the pandemic.

Those eligible for exams can be promoted: Goa Board
But while Sawant had said that all students would be promoted to the higher class, the board circular states that only those eligible for the supplementary exams would be promoted.
Students who have failed in one or two subjects only are eligible to answer the supplementary exams.
“I am directed to inform that supplementary examination for the academic year 2019-20 for Class IX and XI stand cancelled. All students who were eligible for supplementary exams for the academic year 2019-20 shall be promoted to higher class (X or XII),” states the board circular.
Parents had demanded a decision on the supplementary exams so that students who have failed in one or two subjects know where they stand and they can attend the ongoing online classes accordingly.
But after Sawant had announced cancellation of the supplementary exams, many teachers had raised objections to the decision to promote all students to the higher class.
Teachers had said that this would lead to confusion as some students are especially weak. But as per the Goa Board circular, now only those who have failed in one or two subjects will be promoted to the higher class.
